Hebis vs. Gladiator?!

So I was reading through TRO 3075 to get some stats on the Gladiator (which I just got painted up Afro) and was surpried to find that it was considered a failure when compared to the heavier Hebis, it doesn't make any sense to me. The Gladiator is 10 tons lighter, packs an extra .5 tons of armor and has jump jets giving it a manuverabilty edge over the Hebis. For firepower they both mount a PPC but the Hebis only has an LRM 10 with a single ton of ammo and a flamer to the Gladiators paired Medium Lasers and SRM 6. Granted the additional 2 Heat Sinks of the Hebis will give it constant long range firepower but when the Gladiator closes to under the minimum range it will eat the Hebis alive. So my point is, was this an error? It seems to that the Gladiator is clearly a superior design.

Re: Hebis vs. Gladiator?!

I was thinking the same thing myself. But I guess one has to look at the original version - the GLR-1R - it only had a large laser and two medium lasers, and moved along at 4/6. Only the later versions incorporating more modern technology - namely the 4R - were the ones that could compete with the Hebis, and the 4R only debuted AFTER the Hebis, if I am not mistaken. So the Hebis was the first "modern" - in the sense that it didn't use primitive components - Battlemech used by the DCMS.

And then you would probably also have to look at the Battle of Nox, no idea what happened there, but the TRO makes it sound as if the Dracs were handidly defeated. And as happens often in the Inner Sphere, the results of one failed battle doomed what could have been a decent design to the scrap heap.

Oh gottcha, that was the other thing. Looking under "variants" I was wondering why anyone would want the 1R. O.K., I must have skimmed it to quickly. Cheesy

Well, there's also the whole "dishonor/disgrace" thing.  The Gladiator got torn to shreds in its first outing against Steiner, and that made Kurita not want to use it, period.

Kinda like how the modern DCMS wouldn't even dream of bringing back the Hebis.

Re: Hebis vs. Gladiator?!

I like the Gladiator as the SRM and medium lasers can be used when you get close and personal. The Hebis is a dedicated long-range fire support 'Mech. Once a Gladiator gets close to the Hebis, the Hebis is toast.

It might seem wrong but it's just right

That's exactly it, actually. On Nox, you had the Combine's very first 'Mech design, the Gladiator, going up against third-generation Lyran 'Mechs, like the Ymir and Crossbow. They got stomped so hard that the design became a huge embarrassment to the Combine.
