Good evening, all -
I know the title of this thread might seem a bit confusing, but let me explain myself - I've been a fan of the BattleTech series since I first discovered MechWarrior 2 about 14 years ago. I've played and owned every one of the MechWarrior PC games that have come out since that time, and have explored some of the rich backstory that the BattleTech universe has to offer. I got hooked on the MechWarrior: Dark Age tabletop game in 2003, and have been an on-again, off-again player of it ever since. I've recently 'rediscovered' it after my fiance expressed interest in learning how to play (how rare and fortunate is that?!?) and am really interested in taking my gaming to another level by getting into the roleplaying aspect of the MWDA universe.
My question to you guys is this - I've long had an affinity for House Steiner (not to mention the Clans), and I'd really like to create a character with a Lyran background, something along the lines of a merchant prince. I really don't want to go the 'mercenary' route this time - been there, done that, got the bullet-riddled t-shirt - but rather, create a character that actually has some minor involvement in Lyran politics and is a full-fledged Lyran himself, not a gun-for-hire. But I really haven't a clue where to go about starting with this. I have the battleforce already created for him - it's a pure-faction House Steiner lance-and-a-half with a gaggle of infantry and support vehicles, so we're not talking about some major warlord. I'd love the input and guidance of some of you veterans out there with this - and thanks to all of you for being such a rich resource for us new folks to learn from!

You could always go the "son of a noble" route, with his family the ruling power on some backwater world rich in one specific resource that a neighboring faction just took an interest in.
That will get your character into some nice skirmishes, and if you want him more involved in politics, kill off his parents.

Thanks for the input!
Are there any canon planets within Lyran-occupied space that I might be able to use for such an endeavour? Regrettably the awesome Linknet interactive map that once graced the WizKids site is no more, and as I said before, I'm a bit of a newbie in this area. Perhaps a very sparsely-populated world that is richly habitable but with no significant role to play in the plot (up to this point?)

Only the most dangerous can look this harmless.

I would say there are hundreds of worlds in each of the Great Houses that never got more than a name and a vague location. The Inner Sphere is a Big Place inside an Even Bigger Place.
Is it that important that your chosen world is Canon? Or that it even has a History that you didn't create?
Back in the Day (forgive me, I'm that old), When it was still in Steiner Space, I had lots of Fun on Satalice and Sudeten. Then the Clans came and the Cartoon upset me more than the Clans themselves.
My best advice is to get your hands on a Sourse Book that details the Canon bits of your favorite House. If possible, get it in hard copy and enjoy reading it a little at a time.
I've RPGed a lot of scifi games and even made a few Interstellar Master Traders of my own. A wandering Jump Ship filled with Hungry Mercenaries (these guys need a paycheck so bad, they WILL fight for FOOD) is one of the easiest plot devices.

For a map, check the top subject on this board. The 3135 (*cough* 3130) poster is a must.
