A Time of War: The BattleTech RPG Beta PDF Release Errata

As you devour the PDF, if you find any errata or potential problems/issues, this is the place to put. As with all errata, please follow the standard format for posting such details.

ADDENDUM: Let's have a caveat here: If you cannot post constructive criticism (i.e. leave the disparaging remarks out and simply point out the flaws, suggest changes as you see fit, and basically maintain a level of maturity), do not bother to post. I have no problem considering all comments; I do have a problem with abuse. I don't stand for it among the fact-checkers and playtesters, and I don't have to stand for it here.

Page 151: Piloting Skill description

Currently it lists: Subskills: Aerospace, Air Vehicle, Battlesuit, ’Mech, Spacecraft

Yet lists the Protomech subskill in further detail, also only Air Vehicle is listed in the first line yet in further detail we have the other vehicles listed out.

Suggested fix: put Protomech in the Subskills line at the beginning of it, change "Air Vehicle" in the first line to just "Vehicles" because the breakdown is already listed afterwards.

Military Field Scout (page 84) listing two time the same Disguise skill. One should instead replaced with Sensor Operations or Forward Observer, which came more in handy with the Scouts field of tasks.

On page 23 under the Clans subtitle it lists the year that the Clans were founded as 2822.

The correct year is 2810. 




On page 29 under the definition of Freeborn it mentions anyone born in the Clans by the natural mating of parents.

Suggested fix:  Should it not read to the fact the the Clan Trueborns consider anybody who is not born in an "iron womb" to be considered "freeborns?"  That way players not familiar with the Clans will not be surprised when Trueborns refer to Inner Sphere characters as "freeborns."

I can go three ways with that:
  • Lyran gear almost never had a jam chance in older meteral
  • Other tables, like the pistols, seems to list weapons that don't jam
  • I understand anybody can fumble, at any time, but are all fumbles with firearms (lasers, gyrojet, the paint-spray-thingie) yield a jam? By "misfire", did you mean "fumble" or "jam"?
I suspect the table may not reflect what you were going for . . .

Ok some suggestions

1) Character Generation Work Sheet
2) Perhaps not in the Core Book (but it would be nice if it was) but in perhaps the Companion add  Early Childhood Modules of Army Brat (because why should only the Merc Affiliation get a head start on the Military life) and Gentry (because not all Officers & Mechwarriors come from the Middle and Upper Nobility).
3) Allow "Family Training" as a Late Childhood option, but regulate by location or origin Early Childhood and Era.

4) This is a Big One for a Nit Pick, on the Character Sheet more space for Traits, of the half a dozen characters I and my group have made up in the few hours since I downloaded the Beta we have used all the Trait spaces before exiting Late Childhood and all the Skill spaces before exiting our first "Higher Education" pass and that's without spending our Flexible XP on new options.


So far the game looks fantastic and is a few tweaks away from being almost perfect, I'm keeping an eye out for Typos and Editing Errors, I think I've found one or two in the Character Generation section but will double (and Triple) check to be sure before I post them.

Suggestions :

Mil. Camo Fatigues may should come with 1.2 to 1.9kg for 3 pieces (Trouser, Shirt and Jacket) instead of non weight or plain 0.5kg. And with a C/B-B-B/A (for weight reduction due to the use of synthetic fibres and/or instead of pure cotton).

Ghilli Suits, atleast the ones uses since a few years now are fire resistant to some degree and also IR-Blocking while well/professional used. May should come as C/B-C-C/A for 150-200 C-Bills BAR : 0/0/1/0  and E/I/C : 0/1/6.

Pg. 133, Aerospace Fighter Random Table, Medium.  Troika listed as "CMT-3T Trioka"

Additionally, Clan Front Line aerospace table looks a bit bizarre.  Did they capture a few Thera-loads of WoB fighters when I wasn't looking?

Pg. 135, Industrial Mechs, #5.  GUR-2G Gurkha.  I somehow doubt that's issued to for industrial uses.  Unless, of course, the issuer is a WoB front.

"Misfire" is now our new term for "It doesn't shoot right". Rather than fall into the trap of explaining how Ultra ACs and Rotary ACs fail in different ways, we just simply state a weapon "misfires" on a fumble and leave it at that. Since anything that fires burst increases its chance of misfire now (rather than increasing its to-hit) they all have that chance, and it's pointless to remark about it.

1) Ew.

2) Allow for the fact that the character creation system is simplified here, so the bloat of life modules in every product from here on out is going to be sharply controlled, because--frankly--we came to hate them. Also, for generic "army brats", the Blue Collar module can be used (as the example on p. 65 demonstrates).

3) The modules system is strict here: Formal training does NOT begin in early or late childhood unless you're going to pay through the nose for it (like the Clans do). This is why Family Training is Stage 3.

All things considered, though, this doesn't seem to be errata. For the benefit of future posts, once more, I remind everyone that this is an errata thread, not a suggestions thread. (We have only one of those for this product active at this time.)

Potential Errata involving Poor Targeting and Sensor Ghosts, here.

Page 133:  Random Unit Assignment table (medium units)
There's a 25t Blizzard in the medium vehicles column.

Page 141:  Tiered Skills  
Paragraph on page 141 only lists Art, Martial Arts, and Melee Weapons as tiered skills, while the Master Skills List also has Computers, Interest, and Prestidigitation.

Page 142:  Master Skills List
Computers (both tiers) and Prestidigitation [Basic] don't have an asterisk in the TN/C column.
Shouldn't the complexity codes for Basic Tiers be SB and CB, and Advanced Tiers be SA and CA?  If so, Interest and Martial Arts (and their TNs) need adjusting.
Prestidigitation [Advanced] has "7 / SA*T" in the TN/C column.  What's the "T" denote?

Page 257:  Black Market base cost table
Legality lines B and C, the modifiers on both go down when moving from Availability C to D, and probably makes Availability E too low.

Page 269:  Gyrojet weapons
The Coventry Handrocket has neither a faction or a dash in the Affiliation column.

Page 303:  Personal computing
Based on text on page 301:

The note "text reader only" should be moved from Noteputer to Compad

Page 312:  General survival gear
The 1 point per hour energy usage on the Basic Field Kit should be moved to the Advanced Field Kit, because of (I'm guessing) the heating plate.

Pages 208 and 398:  Unit size and volume table
The sizes listed for vehicular units doesn't seem to mesh well with previous books:
  Shouldn't "Small Vehicle (<0.5 tons)" and "Medium-Heavy Vehicle (0.5-100 tons)" be changed to <5 and 5-100?
  The Unit Heights table in Total Warfare lists Large Support vehicles and Small Craft as being two levels tall, but this table lists Super Heavy vehicles as 5m (1 level) and Small Craft as 18m (3 levels).

Pages 335 and 399:  Base salary table
Administrator pay is listed as 320 (monthly) and 8320 (annual), but 8320/320=26.  Administrator pay is the only one that didn't get adjusted from bi-weekly to monthly between FM:Merc and FM:Merc(r).

The only thing I can think of for consideration: that instead of having players calculate out the cost of a fields skills, to incorporate the cost listing /rebate cost after the title of the field name (i.e. Mechwarrior (150xp/30xp) ).

This I actually considered before it became clear it wouldn't work for some applications....
