Why Don't they come with there own mini's?
|
I have used an airbrush on several occasions , but never purchased my own and I was wondering what is a good one for mini's.

I've worked with Iwata Airbrushes on several types of things ( paintings, terrain, and whatnot ). You really CAN'T go wrong with a Iwata. The biggest thing you are going to need to ask yourself is whether or not you want open resevoir, gravity fed in an airbrush or under-slung, canister resevoir. There are benefits to each, it's just a matter of what you want to do. http://www.iwata-medea.com/index.html if you are interested.

You're welcome, WC. You won't be disappointed with an Iwata AB. You can find cheaper brands I am sure but Iwata's have always done me well.

I've owned an Aztek A470 for about five years now, and have never had any trouble with it. It may not be the airbrush that can spray the finest lines, but it is the airbrush that's easiest to clean (to the best of my knowledge), and if I were you, I'd take that factor into serious consideration as well However, the main thing to ask yourself is what you want to do with the brush. If you only want to spray whole models in a single color, you're better off buying a cheap modelling spray gun than an actual airbrush. If you want to paint camouflage patterns with it, though, a double-action airbrush is what you're after.

I've been using Paasche airbrushes since the 1970's and have never looked at another brand. I have the inexpesive H models for general coats and matts while I have a professional AB for fine detailing. The double-action V models are good for both fine and general work. http://www.paascheairbrush.com/store/search.html Crab w/ERPPC, Paasche AB model Models used for BattleTroops Something I did for the Army back in 1980. A copy is in the Pentagon. I even took my airbrushes with me on field exercises. Mohammed

If you have an Art store nearby, ask the clerk for some catalogs.
Paache, Iwata, and Badger are all great airbrushes. I'm "shopping" for an Iwata micropen airbrush, and currently use an Aztek A470 metal body airbrush. I've also got a Paache, and it does the same things as the Aztek.
The most important thing is - get one that feels comfortable in your hand, and is well balanced.
I recommend double-action gravity feed airbrushes b/c of their consistent air pressure.

I have 3 Paashe airbrushes, H, VL, VJR, and I love tham all. I have been using Paashe brushes for 20+ years and honestly, their quality is outstanding for the money. Badger is really nice, but they have a small teflon "gasket" that if it wears out, you cannot change it, it must be shipped back to Badger for replacement. I worked at at hobby shop for 7 years and we sold more Paashe than all others. The Aztec is ok, but cheap, all plastic. I personally would recommend the Paashe VL package with all 3 tips/needles....best value. If all you are going to be painting is mini's than consider a VJR, it is a smaller top feed version of the VL. Be careful though, as it clogs up rather easily when shooting acrylics......the paint dries so fast that it clogs up the tip!!!! Not a major problem, just an inconvience..... However, a VL will do everything. I have used mine to paint mini's, r/c bodies, plastic models, and my pickup's rocker panels. Very versitile. My 2-cent

How many have used an airbrush to work on your mechs? I'm thinking of picking up my first beginner set and was thinking about using it on terrain and mechs. Any suggestions?

You can do some killer effects with an airbrush. The problem with using an airbrush on minis is paint quality. If the pigment in the paint is not really fine, it'll look awful on a mini. It'd be okay for something larger. A friend base coated his Flames Of War tanks with Testors model spray paint and it came out surprisingly awesome!

I've used Paasche airbrushes since the 1970's. Golden brand inks and paints are ready to use -Vallejo also has a line of airbrush-ready paints in military colors. Paasche AB turbine model in picture. Finished Crab mechs. Atlas Unseen Marauder w/Tigerstripes Reseen Marauder w/Tigerstripes I use freehand to make random patterns and cut stencils for sharper patterns, such as the tigerstripes.

Isn't clear to me if in other hand airbrush is used primary for the 1st basecoat, and than there after you still use normal brushes,or did you make all those details with airbrush?

I use airbrush for base coat and all cammo patterns. I use the airbrush for black exhaust around jump jets and sometimes for gun/missile ports.
I use regular brushes for washes and drybrushing for highlights.
I also airbrush the clear finishing sealer.

I've used an airbrush on past minis, and it's fun. It's better for me to paint a bunch at once, to make all that prep work worth it. Otherwise, painting just one would have me prepping mixes more than actually airbrushing.

Using an airbrush does let you paint several mechs at one time, especially when you are painting them all with the same cammo pattern or the same paint scheme, such as a lance or more in the same unit.

Silenced compressors are expensive -Of course, if you are a a tool-using creature like me, you could get a larger industrial compressor with a very large tank -a 25-gallon tank will last you for hours before the compressor kicks in again...and you could use the compressor for sandblasting or pneumatic tools. I live in a remote area so I could sandblast and arc weld at 2 am if i wanted to. I hate my neighbors anyway... so I blast Pink Floyd or the Doors when I paint. One of my friends just started airbrushing. Since he lives with his parents he has to use compressed gas.

I use that little blue Testors compressor - sounds like a fishtank pump for baracuda I would say that it is so much fun though. Right now as I type this, I'm using it. I certainly plan on a couple regiment's worth of 'Mechs in the future!

I don't use an airbrush, mostly because I don't have one. But, I have found the need to prime a mini in a color I can't get in a spray. Fortunately, testors makes this nifty little gadget that will do that without the airbrush. It's a cap that fits on an airbrush propellent can, and you just fix a bottle of your paint on the end of the cap, press the button, and bam...instant spray paint. It only cost about $20, and I've used it alot for things like custom color base coats, washes, etc. It won't do fine details at all, but if you're like me and really just want something to let you prime or do base coats in your own colors, it's the cat's ass.

Sure, here's a link. I don't use the paints this set comes with, but you can easily mix your own. http://www.testors.com/catalog_item.asp?itemNbr=1551

Well, based on a phone call I just got, I am now the proud owner of a somewhat aged airbrush. However, this thing apparently does not include any instructions, so I will have to learn via experimentation. Can anyone give me some generic advice on airbrush operation, such as preparation, cleaning, diluting of the paint, etc?
Thanks!
