I live in Greece and I am forced to buy such 'games' online. Unfortunately Amazon does not carry Catalyst products (although they DO carry FanPro, such as the FanPro TW).
I desperately need Techmanual and buying it from Amazon (combining it with other books), would make me save a lot on shipping costs.
I am thinking... If Catalyst offered their products through Amazon, wouldn't the increase exposure and as a result sales? |

At this time Catalyst Game Labs has chosen not to list with Amazon.com while we focus on strengthening our commitment to local retail establishments.
The strange reality of the beast is, that while Amazon.com is a widely looked at resource for Classic BattleTech and Shadowrun books, they on average sell as much as two good sized game stores. That's it. However, their impact is much more far reaching than that. We hear many reports of people claiming that the Amazon.com price is the manufacturers suggested retail price of our books. This stems from the fact that while they may not sell a lot of books directly, they are a constant referral point for what a book is "worth".
Now at the end of the day, somewhere close to 90% of our product is sold through your local retail stores. I know that some people don't buy that way, but both Classic BattleTech and Shadowrun are large properties and large amounts of books (thousands of each title) go through brick and mortar stores. And these stores try and stay competitive by monitoring prices, including those of places like Amazon.com. They frequently run into people quoting the online price and saying "why can't I get it at 34% off?". This makes retailers feel like they're actually competing against Amazon. If the person buys the book, the retailer is worried that they won't buy more because they'll go to Amazon, and if they don't buy it that day, then in the retailer's mind its easy to imagine that they've gone home and ordered it online. And without full knowledge of how little Amazon really does in business, they tend to feel put out and less likely to try new products from us.
As a business person, I honestly can't blame them. There are MANY different game companies out there today, and its easy to change to a product from a company like Games WorkShop in which you know there's little online competition. Game store owners have thousands of SKUs (individual listings) to manage and try and sell, in many cases, more than your average CostCo even! They need to constantly look at the market and choose those items that will sell, either through approved play, or through policies at the game company level that help them sell those products.
I know this won't make some of you happy. That's why we have the BC store, to fulfill those of your needs who don't have a local store to shop from. We intentionally sell at MSRP there as well. As we enter into 2008, we will begin more and more B&M friendly practices beginning with our retailer locator. Never the less, thank you for your passion for all of our games. It's that passion that gets you posting and we appreciate it. |

You misunderstood me. It's easy to order the books from gameshops that do online sales as well (in fact I just did). But it would be more convenient (at least for me) to be able to get the books from Amazon for instance, so I can combine them with other 'normal book' purchases and save on the shipping costs.
I didn't realize though, that I am in the minority of people ordering, or be willing to order, BatteTech books through amazon.
It is very inconvenient to hear that although Amazon does not contribute significanlty to sales, however it has such an indirect impact on brick and mortar shops, acting as a 'gauge'. I wonder how other large rpg competitors handle this problem, because they do have a very large presence on Amazon.
And I am a bit puzzled how Amazon manages to sell 34% cheaper (or is it that the shops sell 34% more expensive?). If amazon can act as a gauge and indicate to people that the product is 34% cheaper in amazon, doesn't the SMRP act as a gauge too, indicating that the Shop is selling 34% higher than the suggested price, and that perhaps someplace else the price is indeed lower?
In the end, online shops always competed with brick and mortar shops. Online shops offered lower prices, however Brick and Mortar shops offer a place where you can demo your product, find other people to play it with, participate in tournaments etc, which can outweight the price for some people. And this is where Mayfair comes in. This board game manufacturer enforced a 'floor price' policy, whereas sellers cannot go below that price without entering the 'black list' and therefore being denied to order from Mayfair. As a result, Online shops cannot offer such a low price anymore, or so it seems so far. There are ways around it I guess, such as free shipping etc. It's still a bit early to say so. |

Because Amazon for a long time didn't turn a profit... in other words Amazon didn't make any money above their costs for a lot of years.. If a B&M business doesn't make money, it goes out of business.

Bingo. I worked in several dot.coms here in the Bay Area/Silicon Valley during the boom. Amazon got PILES of cash in terms of Venture Capital funding to allow them to discount high, eat shipping, and lose money on each sale by dipping into those huge reserves. Many years later they have found ways to operate on VERY slim margins. But it changes really nothing David said above...

Plus going to a brick and mortar (or rather indoor mall) gaming store gets me out of the house . I get to chat with clerks who play the games I play. Its a more personal shopping experience than buying from Amazon (though eBay is still useful for OOP stuff). |

| The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price almost always includes a profit margin for the retailer. The retailers typically (and EndGame or one of the other retailers on here can correct me) pay a lower price, but they use that percentage between what they pay and the end-user cost as their income (i.e. to keep their stores open and feed their families). The retailers (like Amazon, or one of my local B&M stores, which usually sells BT stuff at 10% lower than MSRP) that sell it for less are cutting into that profit margin. Likely Amazon sells it at close to cost. |

Of course with their size, Amazon might have negotiated a better cost in the first place and their discount isn't as step a cut into the margin as it might appear. |

part of the cost of your B&M price is Rent, compare this my suburban FLGS stocks most games for between 15 & 20% less than the City Stores, they can afford to do this because of lower rent on their larger shop, now some one like Mill Sims or Amazon.com doesn't have a shop to run out of they have one shipping center in a Industrial estate some where where rent per square meter in much less than Suburban Retail. a Store-man & Packer can move a lot more product in an hour than a Clerk in you FLGS dose in a Month and usually for a lower wage.
End of the day Amazon.com has a lower Cost per Unit than your FLGS can ever hope to have and they pass it on to their customers. |

and I remember it so well three shelves (New Releases, Top Sellers & Crazy Specials) and a old glass topped and fronted Service counter with half a dozen inevitably battered Catalogs, if what you where after wasn't on the shelves you looked through the Catalogs and then asked the guy behind the counter to check the computer and get on the Dog 'n Bone to one of the Stores guys out the back if they still had any in stock, If they didn't they'd take you cash along with your details and mail it to you as soon as they got it in or Jedko did a print run. Hell I remember fondly ordering a D&D book wile down in Melbourne once since they didn't have any in, By the time I got home to Brisbane at the end of the week their it was in the post still smelling like the Press Room
Edit: I should add P&H was free to make up for my inconveinance and they threw in a few Travller Adventuers (A$2-3 each at the time about equlevent to geting a couple of US$10-20 books today) by FASA, since I picked up a bunch of Travller books as well as the RDF Manual for T2K on the day they knew what I liked from my Mail Order history. |

Such discounts are volume based, and since Amazon apparently moves no more than what 2 stores do, it's very unlikely that they're getting a special discount. There'd be no justification. Odds are high Amazon used to get it at the same price as the retail stores. Until now, anyway.

But all this is offset by the shipping costs, whereas Amazon.co.uk has a lot cheaper shipping. Also, I can combine my shipment with books/dvds that I buy from Amazon.

It's the same pros that a US buyer has who buys from Amazon... for those who do not have a FLGS who carries BT locally. But since Amazon's no longer an option...

There's three major distributors in Europe carrying Catalyst Products at this time. If your local game store deals with any of them they should be able to get the books fine.

How exactly does Amazon do a lot of damage to the gaming industry? If it basically boils down to Amazon giving others some competition, then that's a good thing -Andrew The feeling is, as I think some have gotten to already, that Amazon isn't operating on a level playing field, doesn't build the hobby, and (via deep discounting) undercuts both the B&M shops (who have other expenses to cover that Amazon doesn't) and the perceived value of the product (it's not worth MSRP; it's only worth, say, 65% of the MSRP).
Not to go too far off topic, but you see these same issues in board gaming generally, the B&M/FLGS vs. the online deep discounter. The game publisher Mayfair recently announced a discount cap of 20% on its products and indicated it wouldn't distribute to those who chose to ignore that rule. The fact that some forum posters felt that Mayfair games weren't "worth" only a 20% discount relative to the old 35-40% discount was taken by some as evidence that deep discounting had lowered the perceived value of Mayfair's products, particularly Settlers of Catan. |
