I am having difficulty in finding a copy of the map set compilations, the local shop doesn't have a large selection and the BattleCorps shop seems to not carry it either. Any other suggestions on where to find it?

As a follow up to this question (and in the same vein). Where can a player find copies of the various Technical Readouts? Many are not available through Battlecorps.

Second, what is the game difference between the various Revised and Upgrade version of the technical Readouts?

Well, most sourcebooks are long out of print by now. Hence you will face a lot of problems to find them in any given shop that only deals with new books. Look wherever used books are sold. Another idea might be visiting www.lordsofthebattlefield.com. They have a board where players sell their stuff.

Second, what is the game difference between the various Revised and Upgrade version of the technical Readouts?

Full credit for this write-up goes to MacAttack - just reposting what he wrote.

Technical Readouts Explained... a bit (Updates).

Update to the updates - now that the cat is out the bag on TRO 3075

TRO 3025
The first TRO (of many), this was reprinted several times. Specific versions to look for is the printing where the art for the Ostscout and Ostsol were mixed up and the version where this error was fixed - but ended up with the Ostsol stats in the Ostscout section and the Ostscout stats in the Ostsol section.Following the resolution of the court case that gave us the Unseen FASA produced a revised version.

TRO 3025 (Revised)
Removing the 'Mechs that were not producd "in house", TRO 3025(R) introduced "downgraded" versions of the Star League 'Mechs introduced in TRO 2750. This TRO has been reprinted by FanPro. This material has been folded into TRO 3039.

TRO 3026
Second to be published, this work concentrated on vehicles  but also included a section for the MechWarrior RPG (1st edition). Reprtinted several times by FASA.

TRO 3026 (Revised)
With stocks of the FASA version depleated, FanPro elected not just to reprint this TRO, but to revise it. In the years since its publication MechWarrior had been replaced by a second edition RPG, which in its turn had been replaced by a third edition. Most of the equipment had long since been published for these new editions in other products so those pages would either have be be cut or replaced. For TRO 3026(R) they were replaced with new material. Much of this material is begin folded into TRO 3039. Most of the rest has been folded into TRO 3075. Thus TRO 3026 is now an ex-product and will not be reprinted.

TRO 2750
Introducing Star League technology and giving the first look at WarShips (but not rules for construction or their use in games - that came with BattleSpace), this TRO is obsolescent. The fighters stats were published in TRO 3057 and AT2. The 'Mechs and vehicles would later find their way into TRO 3050 (Revised), where they will be joined by the fighters in TRO 3050 (Upgraded). The WarShips and DropShips now appear in TRO 3057/TRO 3057 (Revised), the construction rules are now part of BattleTech's core rules, and the RPG material has for the most part been covered in other publications.

TRO 3050
Introducing the Clans and the recovery of Star League technology, this TRO included updates to the 3025 'Mechs, brought in upgraded versions of other designs seen in various products (Raven, Cataphract, Marauder II, Flea, Falcon, Firefly, Imp, Shogun, Annihilator ect), and a few new Inner Sphere designs (Hatamoto, Mauler, Axman, Wolftrap etc). It also introduced the Clan OmniMechs and Elemental Battle Armor.

Reprinted several times, it was revised by FASA at the same time as TRO 3025.

TRO 3050 (Revised)
Like TRO 3025, TRO 3050 was revised too remove those designs that were not produced "in house". In there place most of the TRO 2750 Star League designs were introduced (being used by ComStar and the Clans in this era this was a logical move). The 2750 vehicles were also brough in. Meanwhile the construction and games rules sections were cut - as that material was now incorporated into the core rules.

TRO 3050 (Upgrade)
Wih stocks of TRO 3050 (Revised) depleated, this TRO is being revised (again) and will be titled TRO 3050 (Upgraded). With new art throughout, this version also sees the retrun of the "Notable MechWarrior/Pilot/Crew" section (due to popular demand) and completly revised and expanded text. The fighters from TRO 2750 will be included (getting them back into a TRO once more). Technology introduced in Total Warfare will feature on a number of variants.

TRO 3055
Introducing Clan Second Line designs, Clan OmniFighters, and the Inner Sphere's response to the Clans, this TRO included a selection of color plates. It also introduced the largerst small pulse laser in the history of BattleTechnology ;-) .

TRO 3055 (Revised)
Like TRO 3025 and TRO 3050, TRO 3055 required some errr... modifications to remove material that could no longer be used. This version replaced the remaining color plates with B/W art.

TRO 3055 (Upgrade)
TRO 3055 was due for a reprint. However several issues prompted FanPro to give this product a serious overhaul. There were a number of designs which could now not be used (the scope of unusable material had been expanded). With new art cover to cover, the supporting text was revised (seeing the return of the "Notable MechWarrior"). Several of the designs were given the "Phoenix" treatment (including a handful of 'Mechs that first appeared in TRO 3058), and the Solaris 7 arena 'Mechs were revised and updated for inclusion.

TRO 3057
The companion TRO the the BattleSpace game, this TRO presented the DropShips, JumpShips, WarShips that were not covered by the BattleSpace rule book. The old 2750 art was revised. The book also included BattleSpace stats for all the fighters and an extensive errata section for the BattleSpace game.

TRO 3057 (Revised)
TRO 3057 stocks were depleated. Just reprinting was not an option as AeroTech 2 had since replaced BattleSpace. With no need for the errata or the fighters (now summarized in the AT2 rules book) a large chunk of space was now a void waiting to be filled. A section on "historical" WarShips filled the space neatly, and stats for the Star League versions of the existing WarShips were folded into the relevant pages.

TRO 3058
Introducing the Inner Sphere's first OmniMechs, a selection of ground vehicles, this TRO was the second to take a stab at introducing color plates to the TRO line.

TRO 3058 (Upgrade)
Reprint time comes again - but several designs could not be used (receiving the Phoenix treatment and being presented in TRO 3055 (Upgrade)). The Mackie was also pulled (conforming to no published construction rules - it may get a chance to appear at some future time). As the new core rule books would not include the Battle Armor designs (due to space considerations and the fact that the core rules were not the best place for them anyway), this was the perect opertunity to get them into a TRO.  The color plates were replaced with B/W art, and the text was reworked - with the ever-popular "Notable MechWarrior" returning. Technically this could have been TRO 3058 (Revised), but in keeping with the terminology introduced by TRO 3055 it became an "Upgrade".

TRO 3060
The last TRO produced by FASA, this publication introduced Clan combat vehicles and made use of a number of new technologies introduced in the Field Manual series. It was reprinted by FanPro. No revision or upgrade version has been announced at this time.

TRO 3067
The first TRO produced by FanPro, this product introduced the Clan second line fighters and consolidated all the Field Manual designs under one cover. A number of new designs are also introduced. No revision or upgrade has been announced at this time.

TRO: Project Phoenix
Unable to use images of a number of designs introduced in the box set and/or TRO 3025, This TRO "Phoenixised" them by creating new art that could be used and a back-story of how the redesign came about. This same process was later used in TRO 3055 (Upgrade) for those designs that could not use their original art.

TRO: Vehicle Annex
A different kind of TRO - this product covers civilian, para-military, and military support or non-combat equipment.

TRO: 3039
With CGL taking over the licence to produce CBT products, and the success of the Box Set, and the need for reprints of 3025(R) and 3026(R), TRO 3039 folds much of the contents into a single VERY BIG TRO. Returning notable MechWarriors/Crews to the publication, it also included (due to popular demand) a section covering the long-unprinted designs from the origional TRO:3025.

TRO 3075
TRO 3075 consolidates a number of units from CBT publications into a single TRO and mixes in the orphans from TRO 3026 (Revised). In addition it adds a number of designs first featured in the WizKids MechWarrior game which have an intorduction date of 3075 or before. Also a host of new designs are included (some are designs to which references have been made - but have never had game stats published). On top of this, the old ASF designs from the first AeroTech rules are at last (having been bounced from various revised TROs due to space constraints), given some background. This also is going to be a big TRO.

The short answer is "Yes it is".

The longer answer ultimately depends on you and what you want. Total Warfare is a ground up rule set change and the base of a new multi book rule set. It focuses on the "Actual Battle" and tournament only play rules. Future books (Particularity Tactical Operations) will cover the alternate and expansion rules (Think of the Special Case Rules in BMR as well as MaxTech and various rules in old house books). Again many rules are being revised and updated to reflect years of play testing and fan input.

If you plan to dive back into the game and start playing with others then TW is for you.

If you want to experience the new rules and expanded vehicles (Protos, Support Vees, Industrial Mechs) then TW is for you.

If you are a casual player or more in this for the stories then TW might not be for you.

If you are not completely sure, wait for Tactical Operations and consider TW and TO as a replacement for your BMR (As well as MaxTech, Tactical Handbook and other old fringe rules).

You've got the Nintendo Game Cube, you can play the old Nintendo games but the new Wii built games are beyond you. Buy a Wii and you can still play all the old stuff and all the new stuff.

The one purchasing disclaimer you want to have going in: BMR contains more rules then TW. Total Warfare is Basic Rules for ground and aerospace. Advanced rules (including artillery, fires, smoke, etc) will be in future books. This doesn't mean you can't use them you just have to wait for the future rule books. Most players still keep their BMR handy right now and rely on it for advanced rules.

Hope this was helpful.

Hi there, player returning after a loooonnnggggggg absence.

I got Total Warfare.
I got the Techmanual.
I got the record sheet books (3025-3067)
I got Heavy Metal Pro.
I got my mechs out and polished them up, got my dice.
I (finally) got map set compilations 1 and 2, and map set 7.

So I should be ready to go right? Not quite it seems....................... Huh?

The citytech, city ruins, city street grid/park 1 and 2, and city hills/residential 1 and 2 maps have no buildings??  Undecided

I figured I might have gotten a bum map set that was missing a sheet with the punch out counters for the buildings but I found out that's not the case at all. So where are the building counters? Angry

I have 6 maps currently sitting idle until I can get some buildings for them. Cry Can you send me a pdf or something with building counters on it? Maybe post one in the downloads section for everyone else who's in the same boat I am?

I never collected many of the books before because others in my last group had them all, so I know I've seen them. Were they just printed up for the old CityTech box game? Shocked

I really could use them because now I'm trying to start a group and I need counters to be able to use those maps

There currently isn't anything in place to simulate buildings. However, we've passed your request up the line to see if it's something we can include in a future release (in print or PDF format). Thanks for your suggestion!

In the mean time the usual method is simple heavy duty paper with the Class, height and CF.

A while ago, probably a year? I don't remember - I bought the Classic Battletech Master Rules (Revised) in hardcopy and the PDF's for Aerotech 2 and Maximum Tech. We made a one-off battlemat out of large sheets of paper and a hex stencil... and tried to learn the game. It was so difficult to figure out, we couldn't do it.

Then of course there is the disclaimer inside the book that says "...it is not intended to teach new players the game, but....reference work...." blah blah blah.

I then downloaded the quickstart rules from the (then) official website. Excellent. So we're ready to play. Annnnd... there were no mechs anywhere to be found, in any of the books we had so far. We had to make them. With no experience at ALL as to how to play the game, so making useful mechs was not about to happen.

There was no explanation whatsoever about the Technical Readouts and what they contained, so without further investigation, we shelved the BMR and forgot about the PDFs. End of battletech for MY gaming group.

Now I see it's gottan an overhaul with Total Warfare, and I'm willing to return and try again, but could someone PLEASE give a nice, concise explanation as to what I need to begin play, with a relatively numerous selection of mechs, and without having to buy boxed sets with models? (we prefer counters, as no model can be -exactly- what we want our mechs to look like once we start making our own)

And is this darn BMR good for anything at all? Tongue

Jeff,

Most of what you have now is based on what we generally refer to now as the "BMR Rule Set". As you have noted Total Warfare has revamped all these rules and serves as the base line for an entire new rule set. These rules are an evolution of 20 years of continuous development and play.

The single easiest way for you to get into the game and get going with everything you need for you and your friends can be found in Classic BattleTech Introductory Box Set (http://www.classicbattletech.com/index.php?action=products&mode=full&id=198). This contains rules, maps, universe primer and most importantly, not only does it contain BattleMech record sheets, but it also comes with 24 plastic miniatures that allow you to get a game going in less then an hour. From the box set you can then build into more advanced rules starting with Total Warfare and TechManual if you want, or just stick with the boxed set for hours of entertainment.

If you want to remain with your older books then purchasing Heavy Metal Pro, the official CBT Mech construction software program, will give you access to 'Mechs for play and ability to design your own and print out Record Sheets. This program is recommended for use with both BMR and TW era CBT.

Welcome back and let us know if you have anymore questions.

Purchase Total Warfare (Rules), Heavy Metal Pro (Mechs and Record Sheets), a Map Pack (Maps) and download the updated Quickstart rules (Get going in ten minutes). This should cover all your basic needs. This does not cover all contents of the starter box, as some of that is exclusive to the box.

That said popular feedback however has been that even long time veterans find the Box Set to be a great asset and buy. The ability to have the complete game in a box and able to play with new people in minutes is a very powerful benefit.

I'd suggest buying the boxed set and selling the bag of minis to someone else. We've heard of people buying up to 5 box sets just for extra minis, so the demand for them is there... ;-)

The Box Set does have stuff that you can't get elsewhere, like the current Universe booklet, the Painting and Tactics Guide, the Quick Reference cardstock sheets, etc.

Even if you don't use the minis, the Box Set is ideal for solving your problem of getting into the game for an affordable price.

121 pages.

I wanted to download and print out the factions unit list but it's 121 pages. That's only mildly insane.

My friends and I want to make up "army lists" for specific factions using our collection of mechs and this would be the proper resource for it. But do you think it could be possible to edit it somehow to shrink it down to more reasonable size? Maybe get rid of the "costs" and "source" columns and play with the font and format?

Seriously, all we need from this list is which factions can have which units and what timetable they are available.

I'm willing to wait until 3075 is out and we can have a complete list.

For actual game play what you want are the Record Sheets. The TROs contain stats on a single variant and does not contain exact crit placement for all components.

However one other solution that might be useful to you- VMware Fusion. This is a relatively new product from VMware that allows you to run Windows. Based on the press this is goes beyond an emulator and runs like standard VM.

Yes. They are filled out at to Armor and crit diagrams.....you will usually find that there are several variants of each Mech in the Record Sheet books that corresponds to the more widely used variants.....not those of a one-off field-mod but factory refits.

Wraithcannon-

Catalyst Game Labs is in the process of making an official canon Faction List, which will be made available here on CBT for free.

Until that time there are RAT charts in Field Manual Update, that list the most common units used by each Faction. While not complete they will give you a good starting point.

A better solution for Mac/Linux users who cannot run the Heavy Metal line of software on their systems than something like VMWare Fusion (which, after all, requires you to buy not only that software but also a valid Windows license too; a little pricy if all you want to do is run one application to print out record sheets) is just to buy the record sheet PDFs from BattleCorps.

HMPro is a great solution for building your own 'Mechs and printing out appropriate record sheets, but if all you are interested in are the 'Mechs that already exist in the canon game material, then purchasing the pre-made sheets is all you need to do. Heck, RS:Phoenix Upgrades alone will give you 260+ sheets, way more than enough for anyone to use on a regular basis. Throw in either one of the 3050Upgrade (Inner Sphere or Clan/Star League) compliations and you've got well over 500 different BattleMechs for roughly the same price as HMP and far less than the price of HMP + Windows + VMWare Fusion.

Ooooooooooo this is looking very nice. Is each sheet a different 'Mech, and should be photocopied to use for play, or are there multiple copies of each mech so you can use them multiple times, or are they reusable (not marked up during play) ?

Edit: Oops, i just realized those are PDF's that can be printed on demand. silly me. Awesome!

Just picked up Classic BattleTech after... far too many years.

Last game of BT I played was 3rd edition back in Jr. High in the mid 90's.  I had a few technical manuals and a couple novels but they disappeared over the course of several moves.

So.  Assuming I am a complete newbie and I have nothing but the CBT boxed set what should my next purchase be?  I have a friend who would be interested in starting a campaign once we've run though a few one shot battles to get a feel for the system where we each take command of opposing forces fighting for control of a planet.  The Boxed Set doesn't seem to have any rules for extended campaigns but I have heard a few references to mech prices, equipment maintenance and stuff like that.

That's easy. Smiley Go and get yourself a copy of Starterbook Sword&Dragon and (in case you do not still have a copy of TRO 3025 and 3036 laying around), your next step would be to purchase TRO 3039. The Starterbook, among other things, contains rules and scenarios for a full-blown campaign set shortly before the Clan invasion (3048/3049), featuring the Fox Teeth's company and Sorenson's Sabers company and gives you an easy way to make the next step over to purchasing the first core rulebook, Total Warfare. The campaign is pretty cool and has lots of potential for long evenings, weeks, months full of fun time with giant walking robots. It can be played with using all the miniatures from your new Introductionary Box. All you need than is your friend, you both choose sides and get cracking! Believe me, it's FUN!

TRO 3039 gives you all the 3025er designs you will ever need, ASF, tanks and lots more of BattleMechs to play with. When you arrived at TW and want to try out some of those new any shiny weapon systems featured in there, you might want to purchase TRO 3050U, a book which brings all the designs in TRO 3039 into the Jihad-era (3067+) and adds the Clans as new players to the game.

TW gives you the current Tournament Rules and allows you to play with tanks, ASF and infantry/BattleArmor as well, instead of "just" 'Mechs. And it one hell of a great book, with lots of pictures, examples, full color and whatnot. From there on you will find out that new Core Rulebooks await you if you want to add more flavor to your game - like creating your own BattleMech designs or changing what you got in your boy - you might want to buy TechManual, which has all the construction rules for Infantry, BattleArmor, Vehicles, and 'Mechs. Or you would like to play with changing weather conditions, smoke and fire or have you - you might want to purchase Tactical Operations (out in a few months).

But to start, CGL has wrapped up a nice package of stuff for new and returning players: The Intro Box, TRO 3039 and Starterbook Sword&Dragon - that's the way I would suggest to go from here! Smiley

Afro very cool.  Thanks.  I'm kicking myself now for not keeping track of my old books.  I managed to find a few of my old mini's (including my beloved phoenix hawk) and the box itself but that's it. Cry

I was leery of getting back into BT since it had no support for so long but after the fantastic job that Wizkids and Fanpro/Catalyst did with Shadowrun I thought I'd give it another shot.

Imperialus-

Just so you know, your old Box Set is based on a few revisions back of the game. The box set Keiran referred to is the brand new Introductory Box Set. (http://www.classicbattletech.com/index.php?action=products&mode=full&id=198). This set has everything you need to get going with the brand new, redesigned, game rules. This includes 16 miniatures and a universe summary, that will  catch you on what's happened since you stopped following the universe.

I haven't played since the 80's, yes I am that old.  I am looking to get back in the game mainly because of the strategic level books coming out.  Here is what I think I want, comments on it would be helpful.

Total Warfare
Tech Manual
Tactical Operations
Strategic Operations
Interstellar Operations
3039
3050U?

Do I really need any of the starterbooks or will these give me all the rules I need.  I prefer the 4th succession war era but wouldn't mind continuing into the clan invasion.
