NOTE: Thread is a big "What if?" Sort of an alternate timeline. I think this is what would happen if Clan Ghost Bear created some ProtoMechs. HMP and MegaMek files are at the end of the second post. AND yes... the picture were hand-drawn by me.
Overview
ProtoMechs have been on the battlefield since they were first introduced by a dying Clan Smoke Jaguar. They have such advanced capabilities, complimented by their low production value, that other Clans adopted them and created their own. Clan Ghost Bear is always slow to adopt new technology but they have long observed their success among the other Clans that they considered utilizing them. The Bears grew fond of the Centaur because of its well-rounded weapon layout and aquired some through Clan Snow Raven. After they studied the technology, they created their own design dubbed Arctos (meaning “Bear”).
Capabilities
At first it was designed for head-to-head combat. Later, the Arctos became a recon unit, designed to fight along side heavier units with better firepower. It uses advanced electronics to find hidden enemies or TAG to designate targets on the battlefield. Arctos can cover a lot of ground with its seven jump jets and top speed of 129.6 km/h. With the focus on speed and electronics it had to sacrifice armor, though it is average for its weight. Its small size and maneuverability makes it an extremely difficult target which offsets its armor protection issue. Variants
There are currently 3 Arctos variants. Arctos 1 was the first incarnation and only has a single ER Small Laser. In numbers it can be a real threat for light, sometimes medium, BattleMechs and Vehicles. Arctos 2 and 3 changes its focus by making the ProtoMech into a pristine support element. They trade the ER Small Laser for an ER Micro Laser to free up weight for other components. Arctos 2 carries a Light TAG system and excels at designating targets for support units. Arctos 3 carries a Light Active Probe and is useful for finding hidden or shutdown units. Both of these versions are not meant for heated combat, and warriors who try usually fail miserably. Clan Ghost Bear is the owner of the Arctos and have given them quite a few test runs. They are primarily used in Omega Galaxy who often tests them against the Inner Sphere. The Arctos has done well in aiding other elements on the field but lacks in combat capabilities. Most vehicles can perform an identical role. Omega Galaxy hopes for an improved ProtoMech.

Overview
After testing the Arctos received mixed reviews. Warriors wanted to fight gloriously and demanded a heavier design with increased survivability, or something that can fight up front. After plenty of consideration, Scientists were ordered to develop a final ProtoMech to possibly show some usefulness. Instead of wasting ProtoMechs they either acquired or created, or time, Scientist based the design off of their design and capabilities. After months of testing the Arcturus (meaning “Guardian of the Bear”) was proposed but almost immediately scraped. After plenty of contemplation, what saved Arcturus was its dramatic increase in firepower, armor, and intimidation value.
Capabilities
The Arcturus is very similar to the Centaur by how it looks, moves, and operates in combat. The head was replaced with a more bear-like one to make it a totem design for the Clan. Arcturus also comes with a battle claw over its left hand which is designed especially for the “Frenzy” attack. The key feature of Arcturus is its armor and mobility. Even though it weighs almost twice as much as the Centaur it can move just as fast. Unlike the Centaur, Arcturus can overcome plenty of terrain features with a 180 meter jump. Also, each Arcturus variant has close to maximum armor which allows it to take hits from heavy weapons.
Variants
Only 3 versions of the Arcturus were created. They are either designed to work alone or work alongside the Arctos. Arcturus 1 is Clan Ghost Bear’s version of the basic Centaur model. It comes with a very versatile weapon layout that works around the ER Small Laser. On each shoulder it has cylinder shaped missile launchers that holds an LRM 3 and SRM 2. This version is ammo dependent but it is just enough for a short battle. Arcturus 2 is almost as versatile as Arcturus 1. This version drops the SRM launcher to increase its LRM salvo to class 5. The other shoulder carries a machine gun for minor anti-infantry duties. Its primary weapon is still the ER Small Laser. This version is usually paired with Arctos that carry TAG. Arcturus 3 gets an increase in firepower and maneuverability at the expense of armor protection. Despite its size, this version can move at 118.8 km/h and is capable of jumping an astonishing 210 meters. The main and only gun is an ER Medium Laser housed on the right shoulder. A single point of Arcturus 3 can cause massive damage to any unit.
Deployment
Clan Ghost Bear is the only Clan that uses the Arcturus as of now. Like the Arctos, they are found among Omega Galaxy. On each test run, a point of Arcturus has done well in taking out heavy machines. They are always used with Arctos which use their support equipment to guide their missiles and locate targets.

| Nice designs, and looking at some of the energy variants made me wish that the Clans still produced something similar to IS Standard Lasers so that they wouldn't need to mount as much heatsinks for some of the bigger energy weapons. I came up with these in order to fill the niche of low heat energy weaponry that the Clans seem to lack. |

Not too keen on the AP gauss. I guess if you really want to you can swap the ER Small Laser on the designs with them for the AP + 20 shots.
Anyway, I changed the Arcturus so it matched the Arctos/Art a bit more:
1 - No more main gun. I just put the ER Small in the Right Arm. This allowed for a slight armor increase on version 1 and 2. 2 - Arcturus 3 now moves 7/11/7, still has the ER Medium, but has less armor. |
