Even Bats had to go to China.
yeah cause Batman NEVER hunts down criminals fleeing justice in other countries, nope never
seriously though, this is just another in a lineup of movies that is hollywood's greatest fad. attemping to ressurect movies that where popular 20 years ago. I think weather or not we like or dislike it, we can blame goerge Lucas who proved with the star wars prequals it's possiable to ressurect an old movie franchise sucessfully (and before the prequal haters come out the prequals where sucessful by the ultimate standard that matters in the end... they made Lucas RICH) |

*shrug* I'm not ready to rule out any movie just because of what's come before, so I'm willing to give it a shot. Considering I watched the original more for the bird then anything else, I'll be happy so long as we get some nice flying scenes.
Heh, someone didn't watch 'Stealth'

Heh, someone didn't watch 'Stealth' Nope. Of course, I wouldnt REFUSE to watch Stealth either. I'd probably give it a shot if it came on the tube. From what I've read, I doubt I'd pay to see it, but I'm not gonna automatically switch away from it just on hearsay. That's reserved for Sci Fi channel 'Original' movies. |

When a movie is 'direct to DVD', you know its quality must be fantastic. |

I despise Top Gun. It is a cheap plot that could have been done with any high-risk profession. The fact that they flew fighter planes had absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the film. I far prefer Iron Eagle II. Sure, they both make outrageous use of incorrect aricraft identification, but at least they blew some shit up in Iron Eagle II. I recommend Firebirds for fans of helicopters.
For me, the announcement of Top Gun 2 proves that somebody (possibly the majority of people) in Hollywood are terminally stupid. All I have to look forward to now are comic book based movies and the occaisional Star Wars derivative. |

Woohoo.
I look forward to it. I like most of Tom Cruises movies, I don't give a hoot about his religion. Top Gun had some awesome flying scenes, and if an sequel can have the same (real that is, not CGI), I'm all for it!
Story/plot? Pssht, gimme awesome flying scenes.
Even if they have NOTHING to do with air combat, tactical doctrine, actual flight characteristics, and are little more than a overpriced recruiting tool?
Which makes sense - recruitment is down, so it's time to make joining 'cool' to the fanboys again. |

Yes. Espesially because of that. If I wanted a documentary I'd watch Discovery or something.

| So if the mains are going to be in 18s or 35s, what are the agressors going to be in? And who are they going to be? TG had the soviets, which were an actuall threat, what do we have now? Bueller, Bueller? I'll probably see it on DVD or something. |

Well the majority of the action in TG was training. I guess a major part of any TG2 would be, too... As for the baddies... there's still a couple guys out there with red stars on their wings. (*cough*Die Another Day*cough*) |

Of course, now it's doomed to go straight to DVD. (Well, you never know who they can still get for the lead roles. But I think all of you who dreaded this can breathe a sigh of relief now ) |

I liked Top Gun when I was a teenager, but I think I'd hate it now. "Dogfights" and "Battle 360" on the History Channel make it look like a Saturday morning cartoon.
As far as Tom Cruise is concerned, he's excellent at playing himself playing someone else. The Last Samurai would have been excellent without him. And I will never forgive him for what he did to the Mission Impossible franchise. |

On the plus side, with the way Russia seems to be selling to anyone willing to pony up the cash, maybe they could get some ACTUAL MiG's to play with this time around?
To comment on something else...originality IS nice, but I dont see it as the mecca of filmmaking a lot of people do. Some of the best movies of all time were either remakes or adaptions to begin with. Never mind that there's very little REAL originality left in entertainment, anyways. It's all the same plots and tropes just mixed together slightly differently.
On that note, I'm actually looking foward to Deathrace. |

Some of the best movies of all time were either remakes or adaptions to begin with. Agreed! Looking back, many of the better flicks lately have been comic-based... that in itself is pretty unoriginal. (And not necessarily a prime indicator of fine cinema... there have been some comic-based terrors over the past years!) Still: there they are: Iron Man, Dark Knight... Unoriginal can still be very well done! |
