Hey all. I thought I'd just start uploading a few things, including some older stuff that has been floating around. This map is my latest iteration of the Planetary Assault map. I finally got off my duff and taught myself Adobe Illustrator for this one. I know CorelDraw, but that program can be a little kludgy at times and misbehaves when importing/exporting stuff from Photoshop (so obviously I have to use Photopaint, which though easier to use and just as powerful, isn't the industry standard). Quick pm from Welshman to show that I did this the right way: After conferring with the bosses upstairs, they say this is all right to post. CCing the Admins so they know this has gone through approval. Basically this map comes from Turning Points: Luthien ($5, buy it!!). I created it entirely in Photoshop and Illustrator. The image is watermarked so that you'll see it and like it and Buy It. Because it's full of awesomeness you know. Future maps based on thumbnails and past canon material I won't watermark. It's just that this is so close to a recently published product and I'd rather refer you to it. Besides, this here is limited to 1024x and that's a stinky resolution for a map.

Here's a re-post of my Outreach map. I'll re-do it in the above style. Yeah, things have improved.

Wouldn't a 'glass' texture make more sense?

Would it be possible to post a large blank version? I like to make those sorts of big strategic maps for my campaigns but the hex-overlay I have for it isn't very good, yours are much better.

What colors do you need?
What text do you need? (hex ID, jump-points, etc)
Oh yeah, one other thing. I'd like to figure out a way of forwarding large files (over 20mb). What's the best way of doing that?

What text do you need? (hex ID, jump-points, etc) I'm hoping for something that's essentially the same as the Luthien map you posted except minus the actual Luthien part. Preferably the map area of the image would be transparent except for the hexes and hex IDs so I can pull a map out of Fractal Terrains and slot it in. The overall size of the image should be fairly big, though, so that my players can zoom in to see details. The overlay I currently have is about 4000x1530pixels. I'm not attached to that specific number, but it should probably be around the scale of the detail images you posted. Oh, and don't forget to put "awesome overlay by Bedwyr" on it somewhere Oh yeah, one other thing. I'd like to figure out a way of forwarding large files (over 20mb). What's the best way of doing that?
If you need a file host, you could try Megaupload or Rapidshare. I think both are free to use, with some limitations. Looking quickly at MU's faq, it seems that they're not bothered by filesizes unless they're over 1024mb.

Hmm, so basically you'd be looking for a png file or something that you can just layer over your map? I might be able to do that.

Here, btw, is the new space artwork I'm toiling away at. It's Outreach with an image of that mean nasty man from the cover of DotJ. I'm sort of reimagining the montage. No nucular explosions yet. Because I did it in Illustrator (Corel actually), the face has a triumphal art deco style. I made it black and white and added halftone for a little comic booky feel. Any suggestions about what to do with it? The style doesn't seem to fit in with what I'm doing to the rest of the map.

Hmm... Just a thought...Perhaps go to outlines only and remove the fill? The art deco thing is pretty cool, but perhaps the lines might mesh better with the map?

KatW: You read my mind. I didn't get rid of the fill (it helps when fading against a black background), but went back to lines. The dude's looking sufficiently evil again. I lose the art deco feel, but this works better. Any further tweaks? Now placing the montage is the problem. I want the planet there so I can show those pinprick nuclear explosions on DotJ, but I also want a sense that against a gout of nuclear flame, Mr. Evil is enjoying this. So where and how to deal with the conflagration. I want detail in his face, but it's hard to place good flames correctly. I could try hand-drawing them; this image was nicked from the DOE A bomb test images. Any ideas? I noticed that aside from placement, if I set Mr. Evil to Color Dodge and place the flame just so, I get a cool twinkling effect in his left eye. It doesn't help with overall placement though. edit: One other thing, per a suggestion I used a scanline effect. It washes out in this jpeg sample.

The face definitely fits in a lot better with the map now. Very nice.
As far as the flames go, perhaps you should give it a little more defined shape and direction. What you have now is pretty good, but it you make it more "focused" it will probably be more noticeable visually.

I'm thinking like a poofy textured brush tracing the explosion and shaping it the way I want. I can also leave out some of that high-contrast white; nukes are so freakin bright.

BH-21, you're right. I like the effect, though, and will use it in a separate image. So reboot. What about using a smaller image of a warship and those pinprick nukes on the planet (which is still just a placeholder)? And if a warship, is anyone willing to donate a mesh to the cause? I'm not good enough at this sort of thing yet.

Yep, that's the general idea. I can send you a copy of the one I've been working with if that would help you, although it's a little embarrassing.

Bedwyr:
Do you have an image (either with or without the scan lines) of just the face? Per our chat conversations about it, I have an idea I'd like to try with it.

Here's a sample of the Battleforce mech tokens I cooked up today. The originals are available here. I hope to have the pdf uploaded to PRI once Medron wakes up. Note: It won't look quite the same as the official ones. I completely re-created the art except for the mech silhouette and size. Also left white space so you can put the unit number, type, symbology, etc.

How about a white field on the radar blip, so we could write our unit number on the blip.
This was a problem for me with the old BF2 counters, that in larger games I always had to look under the counters to see which unit I was moving.

Great work But (there always has to be a but ), the green assault lance seems to be missing and could you add tokens for tanks? Could I use this tokens for a game system I'm working on at the moment? (It's battletech related, so the fit perfectly )

Hey guys, Don't worry about missing units. I only posted a screenshot of half the page. Green Assault is just out of view.
I think putting room for a number is a great idea and I'll do you one better. I'll put in some number decals so you can glue them to the unit.
Question for any interested in this before I go further:
Which would be more useful to you, fewer colors (I have 10 on 2 sheets) and more units (like 2 lights, 3 mediums, etc) or all the colors and one example of a unit each (10 colors, 4 unit sizes, 40 counters on 2 sheets)?
If I extrapolate out all the unit sizes I'm going to have 2 sheets of tanks, 2 sheets of wheeled, 2 sheets of hover. Likewise for aerofighters. So if you want 4 aerofighter units, you'll have to print out 4 sheets. 10 light mech units? 10 sheets.
Which is more convenient for you? (and no, I'm not going to do a full page of light davion mechs, not unless someone with an image program using layers volunteers to help me).
