Over the weekend Catalyst Game Labs began selling the first premium-quality plastic miniatures for BattleTech: the Clan Thor and Loki OmniMechs. The reaction to date has been wonderful, with some great questions being asked in that announcement thread. While we’re not yet in a position to answer every one, we can try and answer the frequently asked questions. Q: Are these the same scale as the Iron Wind Metals Miniatures? A - Randall: Yes. The CAD files that Iron Wind Metals used to create the re-sculpted Thor and Loki OmniMechs some years back were used to create these plastic miniatures. Q: What does Iron Wind Metal think of this? A - Randall: Iron Wind Metals has told us that they are very excited about this development. They saw their first significant increase in BattleTech miniatures sales since the closing of Ral Partha with the release of the Introductory Box Set in 2007. They know that a thriving BattleTech line of paper products means a thriving line of metal miniatures. And as Garrand pointed out in the announcement thread, the depth of the line means Catalyst has no intention of producing everything in plastic, but instead concentrating on those with the widest appeal to help increase the accessibility of BattleTech to new players, while allowing Iron Wind Metals to cater to the entire depth of the line. We recently had a big face-to-face meeting here in Seattle of how better to work together and how to ensure that our plastic releases are supporting and helping to push the metal miniatures…we’ve some exciting plans for next year. Q: Why are two of the same figure sold together, one assembled and one un-assembled? A - David: As BattleTech's sales have exploded over the past few years, we find that there are a lot of new players coming into the game, and a lot of returning players who are parents with less time on their hands. In an effort to help ease people into the game, we made the decision to invest in a strategy that allows those people with less time to simply open a miniatures box and play. Just like the Introductory Box Set, this lets people get in and enjoy their game, as much as they enjoy the hobby. As a matter of fact, its so important that we made the decision to not raise the price any higher with the assembled figure than if we had included two unassembled figures. Q: The announcement says “the first two.” When will others be released and are we talking a whole line, or just a few here and there in box releases? A - Dave: Well now, that's an interesting question. You'll have to watch a bit longer to see what the answer to that one is. ;-) Q: Will the ’Mechs in the 25th Anniversary Introductory Box Set all be of this caliber? A - Randall: No. The tooling (the creation of just the mold, not counting CADing or production) for these high quality miniatures is several thousand dollars for a single ’Mech (we’re talking cutting edge, slide-core molds here). That’s hundreds of thousands for those 24 'Mechs just on tooling…a price that this box set can’t possible bear. While we’re doing everything we can to make the 25th Anniversary Box Set special (better paper quality throughout, moving the paper playing maps to board-game quality boards and so on), the 24 miniatures as they appear in the current Introductory Box Set will appear in the 25th Anniversary Box Set. With that said, however, there will be two premium-quality miniatures added to the 25th Anniversary Box Set. Q: Will these first two currently on sale through BattleCorps.com be available through retail at my local FLGS? A - Dave: The first two are only available direct from Catalyst. These were done as a limited run proof of concept. A proof that proved so amazing, so much higher than even our high standards were expecting, that we had to share. There's only a limited number available though. If a retail store is interested in getting a sample though, they can submit a request (include store name, address, and phone number) here: http://support.catalystgamelabs.com/index.php?_m=tickets&_a=submit&step=1&departmentid=13 Q: Do the Loki and Thor two-OmniMech packs currently for sale at BattleCorps.com come with multiple variants? A - Randall: No. However, since they're from the same CADs used to create the IWM versions, they're fully compatible with their parts! Q: If future BattleMechs are released, will those come with multiple variants? A - Randall: While we're not saying that we're working on future 'Mechs, if we were to be working on them, we would be working very hard to ensure that any future releases will come with multiple variants. Q: Do the miniatures come with hex bases? A - Randall: Yes, though they’re smaller than standard size. However, they fit seamlessly into the larger bases available from Iron Wind Metals.

Yes, BattleCorps ships pretty much anywhere in the world. All you need to do is go into the BattleShop (create an account if you don't already have one) and add it to your cart and it will generate the shipping charges. Thanks! Randall

I've ordered from BC before, shipping to near-enough-Edinburgh. Shipping cost is given as just under $14, or $31 for what should be a faster service. IIRC, the costs are partly based on weight, so it's worth saying that this is for a pair of Thors and a pair of Lokis; it's probably less if you're only after one pair. I'm not familiar with the exchange rate right now. I've found a source saying that $14 is about £8.50, so I'll quote that. I wasn't actually intending to make this a real order, but now that it's there I'm very tempted.

The intent behind the effort to include an assembled model is admirable, but I do wonder if this concept won't hurt sales in the future. I fear that trying to please both sides will likely result in neither side being happy. Obviously time will tell. For my part I hope that at some point I will be able to purchase these excellent products individually, as the concept of owning two of each and every 'Mech that I buy in plastic is not very appealing. Of course there are also cases when two won't be enough. But 3 may be! That said, I am incredibly happy with the release of multi-part plastics. I can hardly wait for the next batch. My credit card is waiting.

So...
Is it possible to say what the two High Quality 'Mechs in the "25th" Anniversary Boxed set are going to be?

This is very interesting. I've not yet had a chance to assemble my Loki from GenCon, but I have continued to be impressed by its' quality. I hope IWM does alright with this.

Purely a guess here - I have no proprietary info re this - but it seems likely they'd be a Thor and a Loki. At several thousand bucks a pop (quoting from the Q&A thread), I can't see a lot of new sculpts in a hurry. Mind you, this could be an opening for fan-financing - but on a grossly larger scale than the $300-$700 needed to get a new mech-scale mini in production through IWM. Anyone got a millionaire friend who plays BT? W.

I am kind of expecting the Thor and Loki to be in the Clan Expansion Boxed set, and a pair of IS 'mechs to be in the "25th" Anniversary Intro Boxed set

This may sound like a strange question, but what kind of glue is used to glue together the pre-builts?

I'd prefer something in the Medium class myself. It's not often the huge Assaults get dragged out. A Timberwolf WOULD be acceptable, however.

That's okay. It's a beautiful picture, and from looking at it closely, I've always thought it was a model kit. Perhaps a companion to the Horizon Mad Cat that was never released? I'd love to get my grubby paws on one, that's for sure! Which reminds me, I've got to go harass Mr. Templar Coyote about something.

I wonder if there are any plans to do prepaints in the future for catalyst? I know some people cringe at the idea of prepainted plastics (PPP) but I think it might not be a bad idea for a game like battletech. I know I hate playing with unpainted minis so uits hard to keep up sometimes. If models came out prepainted then it might get more people interested and more people purchasing. The nice thing is they can always be repainted if you don't like the paint job.

But, you have said just that. In GTM magazine #114 you (Randall) stated that one of the upcoming products you are most looking forward to were: 'MechPacks: Premium-quality lance pack plastic miniatures that'll bring high-quality, affordable miniatures to the gaming table. So, I am looking forward to more of these great models! ;-)

I was wondering how IWM would take this. I thought they would make them, but they probaly have to much work on their hands and a plastic mini's would need different production needs.

Forgive me for being skeptical, but I'm not following the reasoning on a couple of these answers....
I understand why the boxed set was successful - you can get a large number of fairly detailed plastic mechs for a great price. But how does this justify producing highly detailed plastic minis at a much higher price point ($9 as compared to >$2)? If I were IWM, I would see this as competing with their highly detailed metal miniatures much more directly than the boxed set minis. Also, if I were a new player, I definitely wouldn't choose to purchase 4 highly detailed plastic 'Mechs when I could purchase the boxed set and get 24 mechs for about the same price. This product seems to cater much more to the experienced BT player/collector than to a new player.
This also makes no sense to me. Why are you are forcing people to buy, assemblage requirements aside, two identical miniatures? I can't see why a new player would view having to buy two of the same miniature as a plus, especially since this detracts from the lower price per figure advantage these plastic minis enjoys over their IMW metal counterparts. Furthermore, by shipping only one pre-assembled, you undercut your own logic on why you are shipping it assembled in the first place. If the logic is that new/returning players don't have the time/energy to assemble minitures, then why not ship them both assembled? Better yet, why not sell/ship them in single packs, and let customers choose whether they want an assembled mini or an unassembled one?

As a new player I absolutely CANNOT wait for these plastic minis. I am unable to get many of the figures I want from IWM because of archiving. Roll on the future.

Tell me about it! It makes me sad that almost all of House Liao's faction specific 'mechs got archived! Raven, Yu Huang, Ti' Tsang, Men Shen, Jingau, Lao Hu... Worse is, these are all solid 'mechs! I cannot see why people just were not buying enough of them for them to not be archived, unless there is something more going on(like how the Sunder got Archived, and we got a really cool resculpt).

I'd guess the lack of Liao 'Mechs is due to them being Liao! Or possibly because the Capellan fan base is smaller than the others and the sales of said minis werent' high enough. Even if the Lao Hu and Ti'Tsang are huighly detailed and fun to paint...

I was wondering why I couldn't find so many of those 'Mechs I was looking for. Of course the way I made my choice is to just go to Camospecs.com and hit the random button a bunch and write down the names of all the 'Mechs that I thought looked cool. As it turns out maybe 1/3 of my list are all archieved designs. And although it doesn't seem to bother some people, not being able (or at least practically speaking) to get designs you really like takes some of the enthusiasm out of the game for me, not necessarily a lot, but some. Unfortunately I don't think the plastics are going to help that at all. If anything they might make it worse. Because the overhead for plastics is so high they are never going to make them for the less common 'Mechs. And as the less common 'Mechs start being a lot more expensive because they are metal instead of plastic then even fewer people will buy them and you will get even more archieved. Although right now I'm half temped to buy a few of the archieved 'Mechs I really liked and buy maybe 10 of each and take what I want and put the rest up on ebay. Of course thats kind of a tangent to the plastics discussion.

While I doubt the plastics development will mean plastic Lao Hus or Bandersnatches, what it might mean is that the metal variant of the plastic mini gets archived, and instead a mech like the Lao Hu is unarchived because IWM now has space...

I was wondering why I couldn't find so many of those 'Mechs I was looking for. ... As it turns out maybe 1/3 of my list are all archieved designs.
The problem comes with the sheer number of designs, and how much is reasonable for stores to stock. Stores don't want stuff that they won't be able to sell, so (in theory) only the best sellers/new stuff goes to retail. Now what happens with those that don't sell as well? Having all of them available through IWM sounds good, but poses other problems: space to store the molds and copies of these poor-selling pieces, creating an attitude among players of not buying because they can just get one later if they want it, and people ordering more direct from IWM instead of through retailers (tacking on available minis to go with the stuff that isn't) - again leaving the retailers in the lurch. When retailers move the bulk of your product, you don't want to screw them over. If having a few plastic minis helps generate sales of BT minis in general, that's a good thing, especially if it gets people out to stores. unless there is something more going on(like how the Sunder got Archived, and we got a really cool resculpt).
Now you're trying to put two things together that don't connect. You cite one example out of how many archived pieces? It is the exception, not the rule. It would be cool to see resculpts of some of those archived, or OOP, but until we see solid info, we shouldn't have any expectation of it happening for other minis.

Question: I ordered some last week that haven't shipped yet. What's the hold up? I know that sort of delay is by no means unusual for mailorder and getting a straight word how long it'll take is about impossible (For reasons that any such date would be extremely unreliable at best), but could you tell me what the issue is? Production? Shipping? Administration? Overload of orders? Something else? Yeah I'm impatient .

Simple: You only ordered it a week ago. Until it's been a month, it's not a delay.
