Re: Threat Assessments 2785

Draconis Combine Mustered Soldiery (DCMS)
134 BattleMech Regiments (as of 2785)
Second only to the SLDF when it comes to military efficiency the DCMS is a well oiled war machine. The Arm of the Dragon has always been fundamentally strong thanks to its inherent Bushido philosophy and competent leadership. Thanks to the efforts of Coordinator Minoru Kurita this martial ability has been honed to a fine edge. He has worked hard to incorporate the best features possible into the Draconis military. In the process Minoru has alienated some traditional elements as some of these methods are seen as too radical or foreign. These elements look to Jinjiro Kurita to remedy these problems. Minoru’s goal and ambition have also done much to stifle any overt opposition.
Philosophical split between old school Minoru soldiers and the new warriors of Jinjiro. Similar to split between Takashi and Theodore. I think some new Samurai see Minoru as weak while Jinjiro's aggressiveness appeals to them. Of course the old school views these rookies as unwise at best and dangerous at worst. Perhaps replacing Jinjiro with Zabu has already been considered but rejected by Minoru as a politically unwise move. As it would show weakness in some circles.

Draconis Guards

Otomo (1 regiment)
Overview: Since the dawn of the Draconis Combine the Otomo have served as personal guards to the Coordinator. For several centuries they have performed this task admirably safeguarding House Kurita. How did they handle the Von Rohrs years? Or were they formed after that infamous dynasty? Plus I will have to research the succession of the Combine and see how protected the Coordinator was.
Inspiration: Established canon formation, see HKSB and FM DC
Child Units: There is only one Otomo (Great Escort)

Sword of Light (5 regiments)
Overview: The elite unit of House Kurita was actually established as an armored corps during the formative years of the Draconis Combine. After the ISF obtained BattleMech technology from the Lyran Commonwealth in 2461 the infamous Von Rohrs dynasty ordered their upgrade to a BattleMech unit. The upgrade or Von Rohrs leadership did not have positive effects of the Sword regiments. Following years of great difficulty they were disbanded by the Von Rohrs. After 2751 the Swords of Light are given new life by Coordinator Minoru Kurita who wished to create a new elite command. Borrowing from the Combine’s past he reformed the Sword of Light putting a new spin on an old idea.
Inspiration: Established canon formation, see HKSB and FM DC
Child Units: 1st Sword of Light (the Ivory Dragon), 2nd Sword of Light (the Steel Dragon), 3rd Sword of Light (the Teak Dragon), 6th Sword of Light (the Gold Dragon), and 9th Sword of Light (the Jade Dragon)

Mobile Warfare
Discuss the free floating regiments and their impact in the DCMS

Proserpina Hussars (4 regiments)
Overview: One of the oldest formations in the DCMS the Hussars can trace their linage back to armor units that served Shiro Kurita. Since then the Hussars have participated in every major conflict that the Dragon has been involved in. During the Star League era they served as the rapid response force of the Draconis Combine with a regiment deployed in each Military District. The unit has close links to the University of Proserpina, a Star League facility along the Davion border. While they have never cared much for politics to some this association makes them questionable in the eyes of Draconians. Not the Coordinator mind you, although they could be more loyal to Minoru then embracing Jinjiro’s new ways, but the Hussars have never been fanatical state devotees.
Inspiration: Established canon formation, see HKSB and FM DC
Child Units: 1st Proserpina Hussars (Blood Suckers), 2nd Proserpina Hussars (Kurita’s Vampires), 3rd Proserpina Hussars (Warriors of the Night), 4th Proserpina Hussars (Luthien Leeches)

Arkab Legion (3 regiments)
Overview: At the turn of the twenty sixth century the Draconis Combine concluded a peace treaty with the fiercely independent Azami. In return for autonomy these proud warrior people pledged fealty to the Dragon and were incorporated into the DCMS as the Arkab Legion. These "foreigners" have always been viewed with some skepticism by native Draconians but they have proven their fierce loyal to the Dragon time and time again. Despite Urizen Kurita’s Japanification (an issue to deal with certainly) and attacks on their Muslim brethren on Dalkeith in 2775 they have remained so. Azami worlds from Shaul Khala, Arkab, Algedi, Markab, Sakai, Dabih, Odabasi, Rukbat, Shitara, to Albalii are scattered throughout Kurita space. Rumors of a secret Azami commando group (the Saurimat) and their competition with the Gaijin Regiments.
Inspiration: Established canon formation, see HKSB and FM DC
Child Units: 2nd Arkab Legion (Defenders of the Faithful), 4th Arkab Legion (Allah’s Blessings), 5th Arkab Legion (Covenant of Five)

Cadet Corps
List the Academies of the Draconis Combine - Sun Zhang Mechwarrior Academy (New Samarkand), Aerospace and Interstellar Institute (Midway), University of Proserpina (Proserpina), Pagoda for Luthien Officers (Luthien), Wisdom of the Dragon (Kagoshima), Kensai Kami (Bicester), Internal Security College (New Samarkand), Minoru Kurita University (??), Sun Tzu School of Combat (??), Galedon Military Academy (Matsuida), Benjamin Military Academy (Irurzun or Kajikazawa?), Rasalhague Military Academy (Radstadt), Pesht District Gymnasium (Pesht), Proving Grounds (nation wide), Algedi Training Camps (Algedi), Ashio Training Camps (Ashio)

Sun Zhang Cadre (8 regiments)
Overview: The post graduates of Kurita military academies. Contrary to popular belief the Sun Zhang Academy Cadre is not composed of green cadets. I view them as soldiers who need seasoning. The unit is a post graduate organization who is composed of the lower echelon of the Sun Zhang class along with a core experienced officer teachers. The post grads would be judged as new members flowed in. Some receive line assignments, others haven't progressed enough and have to remain, and finally some washout going to militia units.
Could one of the most damning signs of Draconis military expansionism be the Sun Zhang Cadre? To explain we had a previous discussion what the appropriate number of Academy Cadres would be necessary for the DCMS to maintain during this era which is about 5% of its total force strength. For example a 100 Mech Regiment DCMS would have 5 Sun Zhang Cadres while a 120 Mech Regiment Pillar of Steel would have 6 and a 140 regiment would have 7. The large pool of available recruits and high standards for limited billets in the general military are a few reasons why the DCMS has 8 Cadres. This should probably be one of our focus points in this unit’s write up.
Inspiration: Established canon formation, see HKSB and FM DC
Child Units: 1st Sun Zhang Cadre, 2nd Sun Zhang Cadre (Fortitude), etc.

District Regulars
Reasoning for the Combine’s District Regulars is as follows beginning with the Pesht Regulars because they are the best indicator. If you look at the Pesht Regulars in 3025 from HKSB and even in 3057 from FMDC the highest numbered regiment is the 10th. So my theory is that no more than 10 regiments of the Pesht Regulars were ever created. Meaning that the Edict of 2650 capped them and perhaps the other three District forces at 10 regiments each. If each District is composed of five Prefectures you’d have two Regulars patrolling each. Following the Arms Amendment of 2752 which double the size of House militaries every District Regular was expanded except for Pesht. As they have no neighboring power why expand them anyway is what I figure. I have calculated the strength for the other District Regulars (Benjamin, Galedon, and Rasalhague) at 21 regiments a piece. This works as every one of those formations has the correct numeral designation. Even the Benjamin Regulars whose top number ends at the 17th has the 22nd as its next unit in FM DC.

Pesht Regulars (10 regiments)
Overview: I will start with Pesht since Ice and I are talking Social Generals. I used the term as a stand in for brown nose or favored person. Assignment to the capital District of the Combine can have its political advantages. And if we want to punish you well we can send you to the ass end of nowhere. Thinking about it today I would say politics probably plays the biggest role in this assignment. Remember the adage keep your friends close but your enemies closer. I was thinking potential hard cases might get stuck here under careful watch. It is another way for favored individuals to prove themselves, see how they react as well, if they can get any thing out of these problems.
Another note about the Pesht Regulars, have they ever fought in a large scale engagement to this point in history. I mean a few regiments might have been shipped here or there but they have never faced any real challenge to their station. Did they go on the offensive during the Reunification War even?
Inspiration: Established canon formation, see HKSB and FM DC
Child Units: 1st Pesht Regulars, 2nd Pesht Regulars, 3rd Pesht Regulars (Gray Panthers*), 4th Pesht Regulars (Evening Warriors), 5th Pesht Regulars, 6th Pesht Regulars (The New Hopes), 7th Pesht Regulars (The Future Guards), 8th Pesht Regulars, 9th Pesht Regulars (Pride of Pesht), and 10th Pesht Regulars (Red Dawn), we have a note on the 1st meaning only the 2nd, 5th, and 8th have got to be made up completely from scratch.

Galedon Regulars (21 regiments)
Overview: Galedon has a proud heritage as the Combine's first District. That along with the Davion-Outworld border gives them ample opportunity for combat. The Galedon Regulars are extremely patriotic and easily the most loyal of the District Regulars.
Inspiration: Established canon formation, see HKSB and FM DC
Child Units: Confirmed 10 (2nd, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 12th, 16th, 17th, 19th, 24th), Possible 14 (21st?, 1st, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 10th, 11th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 18th, 20th, 22nd, 23rd) leave out 3

Benjamin Regulars (21 regiments)
Overview: During the Star League the Benjamin Regulars patrolled the most cosmopolitan District of the Draconis Combine. Bordering the Lyran Commonwealth, the Federated Suns, and the Terran Hegemony they saw the most interaction and foreign trade of any DCMS command. As a result they are probably the most relaxed about their political concerns. While the recent redistricting of Minoru Kurita has removed some of their possible chances for combat many still remain.
Inspiration: Established canon formation, see HKSB and FM DC
Child Units: Confirmed 9 (2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 9th, 11th, 15th, 17th, and the 22nd), Possible 13 (1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, 10th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 16th, 18th, 19th, 20th, and the 21st) leave out one

Rasalhague Regulars (21 regiments)
Overview: The need for political reliance is obvious in the rebellious Rasalhague District. Their Regulars are under constant watch by the ISF for any signs of disloyalty. Their assignment to the Lyran and Rim border is a chance to earn glory many feel like their under constant attack from rebels and the ISF alike.
Inspiration: Established canon formation, see HKSB and FM DC
Child Units: Confirmed 8 (4th, 5th, 8th, 9th, 13th, 17th, 20th, 22nd), Possible 14 (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 18th, 19th, 21st) leave out one

Draconis Militia
Hardly a run of the mill Planetary Guard, the Draconis Militia is by far the most irregular formation of the DCMS. During the Star League showing restraint from their traditional martial practices was difficult for the people of the Draconis Combine. The Edict of 2650 hit them the hardest of all InnerSphere realms. Limiting the number of warriors Kurita could field was an affront too many who already found it tough living in a peaceful universe policed by the SLDF. Cast out of the DCMS annually for "better" recruits and unable or unwilling to serve in the SLDF these individuals found themselves “masterless" or “outsiders”. While it was against the law of the League the Combine kept many warriors on as so-called shadows. On occasions whole Shadow Regiments mirrored other legitimate regiments of the DCMS giving the illusion of rapid deployments from one end of Kurita space to the other enhancing the realms strength. While many in the League suspected such behavior by the Combine they were never able to prove it. These units became masters of stealth and other quick hit & run military tactics all while pretending to be somebody else. Individuals or unit segments (no whole regiment was ever uncovered from 2650 till 2781) discovered by the SLDF were disavowed by the Coordinator. Some of these leaderless warriors (the Ronin) who also roamed the Combine in search of a challenge often stirred up trouble for the SLDF often dueling Gunslingers in popularized events. Some wandered the Periphery fighting bandits or training dissidents to fight the Star League. It is believed that these units trained many of the Periphery BattleMech Divisions which were equipped in part by the Draconis Combine. The Regiments as wholes participated in the Hidden Wars against House Davion and Steiner earning glory for the Dragon but never being able to show pride in their accomplishments. This gradually took its toll on their morale and overall loyalty. After the Star League was dissolved by the High Council they hoped for recognition but instead served as decoys for shifting DCMS forces. Hungry for recognition after years of operating in the dark these regiments are anxious for a fight. The following formations have been identified by CIB and given designations by Terran analysts. Despite their regional sounding names these formations are actually these formations are actually free floating regiments. They travel the Combine often “shadowing” real units hence their nickname the Shadow Regiments.

Kessel Militia (11 regiments)
Overview: Representing more than a dozen “disputed” worlds up and down the Steiner border this Shadow Unit has long been the unofficial repository for foreign nationals in the DCMS. It is believed that some of the first volunteers hailed from Kessel, Vega, Dieron, and Altair. These Lyran and Terran possessions had ancient ties to the Draconis Combine. Additionally twelve contested star systems (Lovinac, The Edge, Gram, Stanzach, Unzmarkt, Vorarlberg were claimed by the Commonwealth after the Amaris Coup while Engadin, Halesowen, Kiesen, Minkuchi, Setubal, Sulafat came under the wing of the Dragon) which were administered by the Terran Hegemony during the Star League era also contributed troops. The newest volunteers hail from the Rim Worlds Republic. These recruits have added invaluable combat experience to the Kessel Militia. Steadily growing in strength these gaijin now compose as many as eleven BattleMech regiments. While the largest Shadow Regiment it is the least experienced seeing only limited combat against House Steiner during the 3rd Hidden War.

Algedi Militia (9 regiments)
Overview: Many Draconians who served the Star League honorably have returned to the Draconis Combine after 2781 to find a society wary of accepting them. Years of service to the League have made them more tolerant of outsiders then other Draconians and exposed these gaijin, as they are now termed, to the virtues of freedom. They have found service with the DCMS difficult at best as the Kurita military stifles suggestions and expects blind obedience from all. They have taken this as an affront to their loyalty to the Combine and the Coordinator and view themselves as the Dragon's finest troops. These units have at their core elements of nine different SLDF divisions including remnants of the 405th BattleMech Division (Golden Pharaoh Division), 18th Infantry Division, 7th Jump Infantry Division, 133rd Jump Infantry Division, 200th Jump Infantry Division, 29th Mechanized Infantry Division, 66th Mechanized Infantry Division, 95th Mechanized Infantry Division, and the 225th Mechanized Infantry Division. Despite the quality of these warriors and their equipment many in the Combine do not fully trust them.

Child Units: Simple numbering system 1st to 9th in this case

Matar Militia (5 regiments)
Overview: Recently reorganized the Matar Militia the officers of this unit have had to assemble their force with either younger Ronin who lack experience or older warriors whose skills have degraded. Forced to select from this depleted talent pool they focused much of their efforts on building camaraderie among its new found membership. Carefully assigning troops to units they encouraged teamwork and their soldiers’ ability to adapt to changing conditions. So far the results have paid off nicely for the Matar Militia which has proven itself a capable fighting force during combat exercises. Like many of its fellow Shadow units they field a medium sized BattleMech contingent. Eagerly embracing new methods and owing to its can do nature the Matar Militia grabs every technological upgrade it can. Based on Matar a neighboring world of Proserpina along the Davion border this unit had previously participated in the Hidden War but much of its experienced personnel have been reassigned indicating a possible shift in Draconis strategy. This will become the 4th Ronin Taskforce with castoffs forming the 5th.

Chian Militia (5 regiments)
Overview: Quite a formidable military unit in its own right the Chian Militia is eclipsed by few others when it comes to overall force quality. Many of its members resent the fact that they have been overlooked for other assignments in the past. This has led to the soldiers of this taskforce to drive themselves hard in order to prove their worth. Mainly equipped with medium weight BattleMechs it does have some heavier elements for support. With access to select Star League era technology the Chian Militia is also comparatively well equipped to its fellow Shadow Regiments. One of the two Ronin units who participated in the War of Davion Succession the unit is based in the Irurzun Prefecture which has a planet or system named Koping Chian. This will become the 2nd Ronin Taskforce with castoffs forming the 5th.

Child Units: Simple numbering system 1st to 5th in this case

Samarkand Militia (5 regiments)
Overview: The oldest group of Draconis Militia seems to be this unit based on New Samarkand. These veterans are mainly composed of DCMS troopers who were run out of service because of their advanced age prior to the dissolution of the Star League. Wandering the HumanSphere as lone warriors for many years has provided them ample understanding of battle but has gradually eroded their discipline. This lack of unit cohesion is clearly visible in the Third which has more skilled personnel than most DCMS units. In recent exercises the Samarkand Militia has acted individually rather than together as a team to defeat opponents in battle. Another sign of this organizational chaos is the unit’s refusal to upgrade technologically despite the availability of refit packages. They instead rely on their proven weapons and their superior knowledge to win the day. Many of this unit’s Mechs are older medium weight designs that have been handed down from their families or are otherwise privately owned. This will become the 3rd Ronin Taskforce with castoffs forming the 5th.

Child Units: Simple numbering system 1st to 5th in this case

Ashio Militia (5 regiments)
Overview: Since the collapse of the Star League a new Ronin unit has been gathering on the world of Ashio. This dangerous new force is made up of the finest Ronin and other select Draconis volunteers. While they might not have common backgrounds the personnel of this assembling unit seem to have a singular focus that gives them incredible skill even at this early stage. Equipped with BattleMechs of all sizes including assault weight machines they seem to be well supplied with access to Star League technology and designs. This will become the 1st Ronin Taskforce with castoffs forming the 5th.

Re: Threat Assessments 2785

Hey gang, we just finished the Preliminary Military Finding for this book. Much still to be written, next up we'll be looking over the Character or VIPs of 2785 and discussing Infantry of the 28th Century. Enjoy!

Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces
122 BattleMech Regiments (as of 2785)
The LCAF seems low because of their industry and wealth but remember they could have been hit hard by defections to the SLDF and causalities from their war with the Rim Republic. The Commonwealth relies on assault units to smash opposition in set battles while only a couple light units are capable of conducting raiding missions.

Royal Guards (4 regiments)
Overview: The Royal Guards are the single most prestigious contingent in the entire LCAF. The formation dates back to 2375 when Archon Basileus Robert Marsden established the unit as his personal guard. Since that time only the very best Lyran soldiers have qualified for this premier posting. The evolving nature of the Commonwealth led to increasing criticism that appointments were politically motivated rather then being militarily based. National allegiance, the ability to follow orders, and most of all loyalty to the Archon has always been paramount. While some deride the Royal Guard for their lack of battlefield skill none doubt their fanatical devotion to the Lyran cause. Also they are considered to be the best equipped unit of the House militaries even though they currently lack combat experience. The First, Second, and Third traditionally carry out garrison, parade, and ceremonial duties while the Fourth is the principal active service unit. An honorary Fifth Royal Guard was created by Archon Craig Steiner in 2529 to carry out “Guardian Duty” in the Lyran Throne Room. Never a true regiment the Pride of the Archon is the very pinnacle for a Lyran mechwarrior to achieve.
Inspiration: Established canon formation, see HSSB and FM LA
Child Units: 1st Royal Guards (The Pride of Donegal), 2nd Royal Guards (The Pride of Skye), 3rd Royal Guards (The Pride of Tamar), 4th Royal Guards (The Pride of the Commonwealth)

Lyran Guards (50 regiments)
Overview: This National Guard was formed shortly after the birth of the Lyran Commonwealth in 2341. Since its establishment the formation drew the very best elements from every corner of the realm. As a result the Lyran Guard is second only to the Royal Guard in prestige among the LCAF. While respected for its embodiment of all that is good with House Steiner the Guard has also clung to some bad habits. This traditional Lyran behavior which includes the Social General phenomenon as well as the notorious bigger is better mindset have remained ingrained in the Guards overall psyche. As the core of the traditional Commonwealth forces these controversial practices have been hard to break especially since some Archon's favored such practices. A good example of these differences is the administration of Robert Steiner II and the current regime of Jennifer Steiner. Not every command is rigidly traditional as there are quite a few innovative Guard units who picked up traits from the SLDF.
Whatever the critiques continue to be the Lyran Guard has grown into the single largest BattleMech contingent in the InnerSphere. The Guard has two hundred conventional regiments (armor and infantry) in addition to its massive BattleMech arm. Critics have said the sheer size of the overall formation coupled with its standardized regimental deployment makes it an unwieldy combat command. The truth behind the organizational technique lies in the history of the Commonwealth and the loyalty displayed by the Guard. As other formations such as Tamars’ were dissolved thanks to internal discontent or others who saw their role diminished like the Arcturan Guard the patriotic Lyran Guard was expanded. Culling personnel from planetary forces and from companies promoted for valor from other regular regiments the unit has representatives and contingents from every corner of the Commonwealth. For example a link to the forces of Reynolds who saved the Steiners on Tamar. The latest two units, the Hesperus Guards, are in part former SLDF contingents as the locale was home to a major Star League installation.

Child Units: 1st Lyran Guard (?), 2nd Lyran Guard (?), 3rd Lyran Guard (?), 4th Lyran Guard (?), 5th Lyran Guard (?), 6th Lyran Guard (?), 7th Lyran Guard (?), 8th Lyran Guard (?), 9th Lyran Guard (?), 10th Lyran Guard (Thundering Elephants), 11th Lyran Guard (?), 12th Lyran Guard (?), 13th Lyran Guard (?), 14th Lyran Guard (The Fearsome Fourteenth), 15h Lyran Guard (Death or Glory Boys), 16th Lyran Guard (?), 17th Lyran Guard (?), 18th Lyran Guard (?), 19th Lyran Guard (?), 20th Lyran Guard (?), 21st Lyran Guard (?), 22nd Lyran Guard (?), 23rd Lyran Guard (?), 24th Lyran Guard (?), 25th Lyran Guard (?), 26th Lyran Guard (Steiner’s Boots), 27th Lyran Guard (?), 28th Lyran Guard (?), 29th Lyran Guard (?), 30th Lyran Guard (?), 31st Lyran Guard (?), 32nd Lyran Guard (Red Arrows), 33rd Lyran Guard (?), 34th Lyran Guard (?), 35th Lyran Guard (?), 36th Lyran Guard (?), 37th Lyran Guard (?), 38th Lyran Guard (?), 39th Lyran Guard (?), 40th Lyran Guard (?), 41st Lyran Guard (?), 42nd Lyran Guard (?), 43rd Lyran Guard (?), 44th Lyran Guard (?), 45th Lyran Guard (?), 46th Lyran Guard (?), 47th Lyran Guard (?), 48th Lyran Guard (?), 49th Lyran Guard (?), 50th Lyran Guard (?)

Arcturan Guards (20 regiments)
Overview: Initially an armor and infantry force established in 2341 to defend the first Lyran capital the Arcturan Guard drew its membership directly from the residents of that world. However, their role soon changed as Arcturus steadily declined in prominence following the government’s move to Tharkad in 2407. Today only a quarter of their forces come from Arcturus via official mandate. Following the Lyran Civil War the Guard became the unofficial unit of the Tamar Pact which the planet was originally a part of. Following the disbandment of the old Tamar military apparatus many natives began requesting billets here. While much has changed since that time, the introduction of the BattleMech for instance, the Guard still remains a premier formation in the Commonwealth military. Since its foundation the unit has seen service in every conflict and contributed significantly to the defense of the nation.

Child Units: 1st Arcturan Guard (?), 2nd Arcturan Guard (?), 3rd Arcturan Guard (?), 4th Arcturan Guard (?), 5th Arcturan Guard (?), 6th Arcturan Guard (?), 7th Arcturan Guard (?), 8th Arcturan Guard (?), 9th Arcturan Guard (?), 10th Arcturan Guard (?), 11th Arcturan Guard (The Golden Lions), 12th Arcturan Guard (?), 13th Arcturan Guard (?), 14th Arcturan Guard (?), 15th Arcturan Guard (Stavlos Tigers), 16th Arcturan Guard (?), 17th Arcturan Guard (Kezla Rams), 18th Arcturan Guard (?), 19th Arcturan Guard (Puma), 20th Arcturan Guard (White Bears of Uther) [two nicknames will be the Arcturan Northern Nomads and Tharkan Woodsmen see HSSB p. 69 - 23rd Arcturan Guards aka the Frost Giants]

Donegal Guards (20 regiments)
Overview: This unit was founded by the Protectorate of Donegal in 2314 shortly after the establishment of that early interstellar state. Today the Guards are a mainstay of the Lyran military containing one hundred regiments, twenty of which are BattleMech forces. As they hail from the Commonwealth’s central state the Guard is closely tied to the Lyran ruling house. While many don’t consider them as fanatical as the Royal or Lyran Guard they are renowned for their determination to overcome any obstacles which impede their orders. Often the High Command will assign the Donegal Guard to a campaign as a demonstration of the Lyran will to win. They remain closely associated with House Steiner and the Protectorate of Donegal where they are frequently stationed. Roaming the vast frontiers of the Protectorate as well as the Commonwealth’s interior the the Donegal Guard have beaten their fair share of foreign and domestic enemies. Sharing a border with the Free Worlds League and the Periphery has resulted in their primary opposition coming in the form of Marik Regulars and Pirates. The Twentieth which is the most recent addition to the Guard, formerly a Star League Loyalist Regiment, has experienced the horrors of the Amaris Coup.
Inspiration: Established canon formation, see HSSB and FM LA
Child Units: 1st Donegal Guard (?), 2nd Donegal Guard (Unwearied Second), 3rd Donegal Guard (Justice Brigade), 4th Donegal Guard (?), 5th Donegal Guard (Bulldogs), 6th Donegal Guard (White Hawks), 7th Donegal Guards (Earthquakers), 8th Donegal Guards (?), 9th Donegal Guards (?), 10th Donegal Guard (Lilly’s Lancers), 11th Donegal Guard (The Push Me Pull Yours Regiment), 12th Donegal Guard (Crocodiles?), 13th Donegal Guard (?), 14th Donegal Guard (?), 15th Donegal Guard (?), 16th Donegal Guard (?), 17th Donegal Guard (?), 18th Donegal Guard (?), 19th Donegal Guard (?), 20th Donegal Guard (Donegal Regulars, see SW board game)

Lyran Regulars (12 regiments)
Overview: As the Star League gradually disintegrated a need within the LCAF was recognized by the High Command. The usefulness of unconventional forces was becoming apparent as the 28th century wore on. Assembling an ad hoc brigade named the Lyran Regulars from less than traditional sources was their solution. These scoundrels without proper pedigree drew the ire of the Commonwealth’s military establishment who considered them mercenaries at best. During the Hidden Wars they drew difficult assignments which were undertaken without support. Heavily influenced by the SLDF the Regulars used a mixture of arms to achieve battlefield success. This in turn has won them a measure of respect from the Lyran authorities who still have trouble crediting these inferior troops.
Originally two separate divisions (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 11th, 12th, 13th) which included BattleMechs, armor, and infantry were created to mirror each other. Using time honored techniques of misdirection and stealth these units effectively camouflaged themselves sometimes even as Lyran Guards. In addition to a mirrored deployment system which often plays with the Regulars numerical designations, units frequently suffer high casualty rates thanks to their dangerous assignments which require constant reorganization. This created a further patchwork which foreign intelligence agencies still have trouble deciphering. As a result the location, strengths, and identities of the Lyran Regulars are a challenging group to keep track of at all times.
Recently the Lyran Regulars have doubled in size and there are future plans for further expansion. This growth caused by the addition of Star League and Rim Republic veterans has allowed them to field 12 BattleMech regiments supported by conventional forces. By pairing these new units in much the same fashion as the original formations the Regulars have managed to retain their mirrored deployment system. Many fear that this organizational feature may be in jeopardy thanks to the speed of future enlargement in an uncertain time. Unfortunately the maintenance needs for these work horse units have not been met by the High Command. As a result some of their high tech equipment has already fallen into disrepair.

Future Units: 5th Lyran Regulars (Ferris Wolverines – see Merc Guild and canon ComStar ruling), 7th Lyran Regulars (New Delhi Lancers or Fighting Seventh – formed early in the canon 1st SW), 8th Lyran Regulars (Mad Hatters – formed early in the canon 1st SW), 9th Lyran Regulars (Karilon Magicians – Mechwarrior Brotherhood from the RWR joined LC during canon 1st SW) [obviously since these formations came into being during the extreme duress of the SW a dedicated mirror unit will not be made]

Skye Rangers (15 regiments)
Overview: The Skye Rangers are survivors whose origins date back to the turn of the twentieth fourth century. Originally the army of the Federation of Skye this unit has compiled hundreds of years of military traditions. Over this time these brave warriors have squared off against forces from the Draconis Combine, the Free Worlds League, and even the Terran Hegemony with a good deal of success. Prior to the 2370s relations between Skye and Terra had been cool at best thanks the Mother Doctrine and the Symra Ambush. That began to change when Lord Raymond the fourth Director-General of the Hegemony married Katherine McQuiston. The couple was soon involved in a scandal when a neglected Katherine turned to Raymond’s brother Brian for attention. The affair was discovered shortly before Raymond’s death nearly ended the Cameron dynasty and hopes for renewed ties. However, Brian Cameron beat the charges and became the fifth Director. In 2399 he married Katherine McQuiston and ties between the Hegemony and Skye have been close ever since.
Their adversaries have not been confined to foreign nationals but also include domestic opponents. When Robert Marsden staged a military coup in 2375 to seize control of the Commonwealth most of the Rangers backed him. Marsden had built many contacts within the Skye Rangers since the establishment of the Lyran Commonwealth. They formed a core of an army loyal to him while a few Rangers futility resisted on Skye this long overdue move towards order. Afterwards the Rangers were rebuilt by a grateful Archon Basileus although some accuse “the Crusher” of playing politics. Restoring the Rangers as a public relations move to try and foster good will on Skye. In 2471 Archon Michael Steiner married Regina McQuiston, last of the McQuiston line, which helped tie Skye and its Rangers to House Steiner. The Lyran Civil War which began in 2501 and lasted to 2505 split the contingent in much the same way. Thanks to the backing of these loyal Skye Rangers the Archon managed to defeat his opponents once again. As a result Robert Steiner spared the unit from complete dissolution a fate which befell Tamar’s army who had a well deserved martial reputation.
House Lestrade was awarded title to Skye following the Civil War by Archon Robert Steiner for loyal service. While the Duke's Own Huscarls, an infantry unit, serve as the Duke of Skye's personal guard the Skye Rangers have formed a close bond with their new liege. Their unconditional fidelity to House Steiner would be tested in 2591 by the ‘Day of Rage’. This unjust attack by Archon Viola Steiner upon her own people during the Reunification War has strained relations between the unit and the Archon since. In 2643 the Decentralist Movement, which had widespread support in Skye, nearly dissolved the Commonwealth. Many Skye Rangers left the LCAF to serve General Kerensky during the Amaris Coup and sympathies to the Last Cameron remain to this day. Despite these feelings the Rangers remain a major bulwark of the Lyran military.
Inspiration: Established canon formation, see HSSB and FM LA
Child Units: 3rd Skye Rangers, 4th Skye Rangers, 10th Skye Rangers, 25th Skye Rangers, plus eleven (11) more commands which are not in numerical order (not the 17th or 22nd).

Tamar Hussars (1 regiment)
Overview: The Hussars are the only noble force in the Lyran Commonwealth, thanks to the unique position of Tamar, who are considered a line unit. The guardians of the Tamar Pact have ancient ties to the region that predate the Lyran nation. The Ducal Guard has always been well equipped first receiving BattleMechs in 2465. With a reputation for martial excellence the Hussars were reformed by the Kelswa family in the wake of the Lyran Civil War (circa 2506). As the only Tamar unit to survive this war their role and notoriety expanded. They saw action in the Reunification War and were involved in Viola Steiner’s “Day of Rage”. It was during the Star League era that the Hussars took on their modern character. As the Archon forbid noble troops from having any heavy ‘Mechs they became experts in swift and mobile warfare. Their flamboyant and daring characters both in and out of battle earned them the moniker, the Tamar Tigers. This well trained light force is currently commanded by Duke Graham Kelswa of Carse.

   Boot Camps
The hard way of earning a place in the upper echelon of the Lyran military is through the numerous Boot Camps that dot the Commonwealth. The LCAF maintains scores of these fairly generic training grounds throughout its territory in order to provide basic training to its citizenry. For ten weeks these camps instruct those electing to under go such national service in the basics of military life. Discipline, fitness, field craft, weapons skill, and survival are all taught here. Many serve out their time in their respective planetary militia but a few are selected for advanced training. Instructors carefully evaluate each class searching for those who excel in these martial exercises. Earning such a place isn’t easy or even possible for most but a special few go on to higher assignments within the LCAF.

TA 2785: Infantry of the 28th Century

Okay gang the next phase of Threat Assessments 2785 is to detail the infantry of this time period. While the Nighthawk is out there and all sorts of specialized infantry exist what does the typical infantryman look like? What is he outfitted with? Weapons? Armor? Survival and Communication Gear? I'll have more details later I'm trying to do my research as I go here.

I think the most sensible thing to do would be to average it between Clan and ComGuards. I don't think either faction has mad many advancements beyond the SLDF.

I'm guessing the typical infantryman will not want to be looked at: camoflage. He will not want to be hit: body armour light enough to move in and an entrenching tool to make a foxhole. He will want to eat, drink and not die from exposure so he will want supplies, a tent and a light environment suit toughened to take movement etc and perhaps wear armour on the outside of.

He will want a gun and a bayonnet, grenades and a radio to call for help.

An infantryman on the battlefield will want to be able to reach out and touch the nasty men in armour trying to hurt him so he will want a LAW.

Realistically, he will look a lot like a Western soldier in Afghanistan or Iraq: the infantry does not change all that much as it is about the meat, not the wraping - look at a Roman soldier v a medieval one, an early Renaissance musketeer v a Napoleonic redcoat, a WW1 "Tommy" v a 1982 Falklands Para, look at a WW2 North African SAS trooper and a US SF solider in modern Iraq or Afghanistan

(yes, I am proud of the long list of comparisons!)

Re: Threat Assessments 2785

Thanks guys, I wanted to throw out a few thoughts I had on the BTSD forums about Small Arms.

Quote
Hmm, well I could actually see the Terran Alliance armed with some silly over sophisticated small arms but they might have had a few things that actually worked. Their Marines were quite capable but small in numbers. The Rebels on the other hand would likely use primitive weapons, do you think they would be allowed to transport firearms from Earth during colonization? Page 17 in the SLSB shows a Terran Grenadier with a potato masher type grenade. Unlikely I would think. Still you have a whole era here for weapons development.

Next up the birth of the Houses and the Age of War. Certainly the newly developing nations of the InnerSphere would all have their own small arms philosophy. The Hegemony would likely build on the Terran Alliance successes reworking impracitcal innovative designs to actually function on the battlefield. Kurita is likely a good reliable producer of small arms but you have dozens of others. The Capellan states, the Federated Suns, Hindu Collective, Ozawa, Lyran states, Rasalhague, and the FWL. That is almost another two eras of development for small arms.

Finally the Reunification and the Star League for BTSD. Canon of course would press on further but here high tech small arms might abound and likely use common ammunition and perhaps parts. SLDF troops have the Mauser Assault System of course but there is another common firearm. page 121 illusrated from SLSB shows the Half Rifle, considered a sidearm it had the power of modern day laser rifles twice its size.

You are probably right Plainsfox, I don't think even the Terran Republic would have SLDF tech level infantry. Not exactly sure what that means as some sort of regression or more likely simplistic designing for rapid production would have taken place. The Houses would be nipping at their heels in certain areas maybe matching or surpassing them in certain specializations. Some type of blade weapon for Kurita infantry?? And then there is the Periphery.

How could we apply technical advances to camoflage, body armor, entrenching tools, supplies, rations, enviromental and other survival gear?

Nice visual DoctorMonkey, too bad I can't draw that. Smiley

Oh and BTW I researched the old BattleTechnologies along with my BTSD cohorts and complied this listing of small arms.

Re: Threat Assessments 2785

Unfortunately the only fully functional website we have working as of today is our forum. Come over and join up if you like.

A couple of more thoughts I had on SLDF infantry while back;

Quote
Okay took a look last nite at TRO2750, the SLSB, and Mechwarrior 1st Edition. Let me start with Mechwarrior 1st Edition (pg 53-57) and say everything is very generic and certainly could have existed in 2785. Most likely this basic equipment would be available to nearly anyone throughout the Human Sphere. Nothing much else to report. I will attempt to compile a list of arms later on unless somebody else wants to help out.

TRO2750 and the SLSB give us a good look at the standard Star League trooper. However, it leaves us with some interesting questions as TRO2750 lays out very different equipment. First the SLSB gives a great look at the infantry on several different pages (pg 14, 55, 103, 121, 169). They are never shown using the Mauser 960 Assault System (pg 158 TRO2750) rather they use the Half-Rifle. For sake of completeness the Half Rifle (p 169) is considered a sidearm, a weapon with the power of modern-day (3025) laser rifles twice its size. So the standard SL trooper most likely carried both into battle which is pretty nasty.

Page 111 of the SLSB describes the infantry uniform which includes an Energy Pack for his weaponry raising a question especially for Jump Infantry. How the HELL CAN you fit two very large Packs on? I don't think you can. Meaning does the Jumper have to use another weapon base besides the energy ones? Again I'd think so which means Slug Throwers or Gyrojets. What other weapons are infantry likely to carry? Likely include a knife or a dagger. How about Grenades or Explosives?

The "Mantis or Antman" Helmet as I call it is a tremendous advantage to the SL and now Terran troopers for its targeting and communications capabilities. Although it makes me wonder if the Republic can continue to produce such high tech weaponry. Section 6 (Personal Equipment) of TRO2750 also includes other fun stuff like the Emergancy Jetpack (p 154, one shot escape booster), EMP Pulse Mines (p154), AMR-20 Rifle/Pistol Silencer (p156), JAF-05 Flash Suppressor (p156), Grapple Rod (p156), MechWarrior's Combat Suit (p159), and the Medipack (p159, interesting to note this was designed by Otomo apparently during Takiro Kurita's reign and is pretty common in House and SL units).

Re: Threat Assessments 2785

I was going through information in the old Sourcebooks today as well as what I had written for the Terran Republic in their FM. Not sure if I did anything for standard merc infantry?

Infantry Uniform (SLSB – 2780s –  page 111)
Troopers in the Regular Army wore uniforms that seemed too light and thin for the battlefield. Gloves and standard-issue boots covered the cuffs of olive drab pants and shirt. A legless step-through jacket in standard camouflage fit over the shirt. The trooper's rank patch and unit insignia appeared on the shoulders of the jacket. A trooper wore a small backpack that carried a powerful battery for the soldier's laser weapon and the trooper's personal items. When the unit was traveling, the soldier's sleeping bag was tied to the bottom of the pack.
The most obvious difference between the trooper of the Regular Army and the foot solder of today is the full helmet worn in the SLDF. From the few surviving specimens and from research, engineers have leaned that the helmet was a marvel of electronics and strength. The design provided an excellent field of vision for the soldier. The three panes of the visor were made of a secret polarizing, clear polymer that provided excellent protection against bullets and that turned to silver tone the instant it was hit with the light of a laser. Through voice commands to the internal computer, the trooper could switch to several modes of vision. Infrared allowed the soldier to see hidden heat sources, and EE (Electronic Emission) vision showed him the source of manmade electronics. The trooper also had sighting screens that projected on the visor of the helmet to help him aim.

Duty Uniforms (FM TR – 2785 – page 63)
The everyday clothes of the Terran soldier have changed very little from the Star League’s standard field uniform. Just like dress uniforms they are divided into two different types that emphasize what branch of service the soldier is a part of rather than the individual’s rank.
Troopers in the Terran Army still sport the olive drab pants and shirt of the Star League Regular Army. This light weight clothing is environmentally friendly and surprisingly durable thanks to advanced fabrics that seemingly adjust to various climates. Fitting over the olive drab shirt is a legless step-through jacket in standard camouflage. Appearing on the shoulders of this jacket is the soldiers rank. The Stars of the Republic appear on the left upper arm while the unit insignia appears on the right. Completing the look with standard issue gloves and boots is the helmet worn by the TRAS ground trooper. Many still retain the high tech Star League era defenses, visual enhancements, and integral communications that make these helmets far superior to their InnerSphere counterparts.

Infantry (HLSB – 3025 – page 74)
Capellan infantry are denoted by their dark green uniforms reinforced by plasteel mesh arm and leg coverings. Insignia worn at the belt and along should and arms is typically a subdued green. Green shoulder packs with white shoulder straps are common, as are spare energy-weapon packs worn over the bottom half of the backpack. Each infantryman carries personal rations for two days, with additional stores maintained at the company level.
In addition, each infantryman wears a standard protective helmet of plasteel reinforced by synthetic ceramic fibers, which provides good protection against enemy laser fire. Black, woven belts have pouches for carrying small arms ammunition, explosive clips, steel canteens, and mess kits.
In Warrior House regiments, infantrymen also carry a personal katana blade (with which they are highly proficient), supported on a black sling worn over the right shoulder and attached to the waist belt. Officers likewise sport numerous dirks and throwing blades for use at close quarters. Warrior House troops are also denoted by dark green “flak jackets”, on which additional ordinance is typically carried.
Rank insignia for all infantry is typically sewn on the lower arms and collar lapels, with name patches appearing on the right upper torso.

Conventional Troops (HMSB – 3025 – page 86)
Artillery, armored vehicle crew, and infantry uniforms differ less between provinces than those of other branches of the military services. All such troops, regard-less of provincial affiliation, wear a full-length coverall covered by a combat vest, helmet, gloves, and boots. The outfit’s outer garments offer varying degrees of protection against enemy fire; the League Regular and Regulan troops wear full torso armor, while Marik, Andurien, and Oriente forces favor a hybrid that provides a triple layer of titanium around the shoulders and chest, combined with a much thinner layer of Kevlar around the lower torso and abdomen (substantially lowering the vest’s total weight and increasing the wearer’s mobility). The League-issue boots are made of leather or tharn-hide with thick rubber soles and extend almost to the knee; many models contain an ankle sheath for a dagger or throwing knife.
Although lightweight and providing less protection than the helmets worn by Mechwarriors, the conventional helmet is still loaded with useful features. The chinstrap and side-panels contain short-range communication transmission and reception equipment, while the glare-reflective goggles contain infrared sights. The center stripe of the helmet is color-coded with the provincial affiliation of the unit: magenta for League units, deep purple for the Marik Commonwealth, yellow for Oriente, green for Andurien, and crimson for Regulus.

Re: Threat Assessments 2785

Conventional Troops (HKSB – 3025 – pdf page 128)
Soldiers in the army’s conventional branches (infantry, armored vehicles, artillery, and so on) wear a rugged, full-length, light tan jump suit. On the chest of the suit is the soldier’s branch pin. Shoulder and elbow padding keep the soldier from hurting himself when he falls or crawls around, or when he carries a heavy weapon on his shoulder.
The conventional hat has a short visor and ear flaps, which may be turned down during cold weather or fierce winds. Artillery personnel have extra insulation in the ear flaps to muffle the sound of Long Tom artillery.
Many infantry units, especially those that use flamers, are issued helmets, gloves, and thick jerkins to protect them from blunt weapons and flamers.
Vehicle personnel also receive jerkins, but there are designed to absorb shocks from bumping around inside a vehicle. In addition, their helmets are designed to prevent injury to the head. Both have cooling elements inside them that help keep the confined crew comfortable.
Because the color of the uniform is important in recognizing the soldier’s branch, conventional soldiers are not issued camouflage uniforms. They must wear their tans while on arctic worlds and jungle worlds.

Infantry (HSSB – 3025 – pdf page 112)
The LCAF infantry wear a standard field uniform, combat vest, and a helmet. The standard field uniform comes in six colors: white, black, Skye green, camouflage-vegetation, camouflage-urban, and the standard grey-green. In addition to helping the soldiers blend into their surroundings, the colors have a symbolic use. Any of the three Royal Guards units in the Triad on Tharkad wear a ceremonial white uniform. Guards at the Honor of Skye are from a Skye Rangers regiment and wear uniforms in the dark emerald green of Skye. In the Duke of Tamar’s palace, the guards are from an Arcturan Guards unit and wear black uniforms.
The infantryman wears a combat vest over his uniform. The vest provides some protection to the wearer’s chest as well as providing pockets for storing various items. The vest’s main function is to provide a simple frame to which large and bulky objects, such as a standard field pack or the battery of a laser rifle, can be attached. With its ample supply of Velcro strips, hookbars, eyes, and straps, just about anything can be secured to the vest. Worn around the waist is a belt with pouches for carrying food, water, and space ammo as well as any other objects the solder needs. The belt also supports a holster for the trooper’s sidearm, which is usually a slug-throwing pistol.
The design of the infantryman’s helmet is effective. It has no flat edges to catch laser beam fire and is covered with a layer of shiny ablative material. An enemy’s laser bolt will usually either ricochet off the helmet or be safely absorbed. Beneath the shiny exterior is a thin layer of plastisteel, a synthetic material of great strength and absorbency. Inside the helmt, there is plenty of room for communication equipment, as well as a passive IR device to provide night-sight for the soldier. For all the protection it provides, the helmet is quite light.
Unit insignias have traditionally been riveted onto the sides of the soldier’s helmet. Recent studies indicate that placing the insignias there compromises the effectiveness of the helmet, and so soldiers have begun placing their unit patches on the sides of their backpack instead. The center panel of the helmets are color-coded to the various units, which constitutes an insignia.
White is for members of the Royal Guards. Blue means the soldier is from either a Lyran Guards or Lyran Regular unit. Green is the color for soldiers attached to a Skye Rangers regiment. Plae grey means the soldier is from an Arcturan Guards unit. Yellow is reserved for infantry units attached to Winfield’s Brigade. Mercenary units usually wear unpainted, dull brown helmets.

Re: Threat Assessments 2785

I wish! We are working on it. Let me give you an update on our projects.

A revision of Fanmap 2785 is currently underway thanks to HB Major Periphery States. We are trying to integrate with canon where possible but there will be differences of course. I hope to have that done soon for your enjoyment.

Battlezone: Lambrecht is nearly complete - I just need some help building scenarios other than that it is done.

Work on our new website entitled Shattered Core is also nearing completion. More information on that to follow! Wink

For Threat Assessments 2785 we've wrapped up discussions on the militaries of the InnerSphere and have moved to the Periphery. Right now the active subject on BTSD forums is Rim Worlds Successor States. Wink In the near future we should be discussing VIPs of the Era who will be briefed in TA2785 as well as Military Industries. A realistic release date is sometime next year, September at the latest. Sorry about the delay.

And as always we are looking for fresh ideas - so chime in if you in if you'd like. Hope that answers some of your questions.

Re: Threat Assessments 2785

Quote
Hendrik Grimm was considered a rising star in the LCAF and had earned fame at a young age as a battalion commander in the 3rd Lyran Guards. He was later diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder that would have required immediate treatment, and suffered from violent mood swings. His close ties to House Steiner prevented a court-martial on three occasions, however, and by 2829 he was a Colonel, commanding the 65th Lyran Regulars (Old One-Eyes).

Deployed in a Lyran offensive against the Free Worlds League on Graham IV, his regiment was cut off from supplies and reinforcements while facing defeat from a superior force of Marik Militia in or shortly after 2829. Grimm's paranoia led him to believe that he had been sent to hold an untenable position because his superiors wanted him dead. He even claimed that the reason for the plot was that he was the true heir to the Star League's throne.

Against explicit orders, he ordered the 65th Lyran Regulars to withdraw from Graham IV, effectively surrendering the planet to the League. House Steiner tried to strip him of his commands and reclaim as many troops and equipment as possible, ultimately declaring them renegade and placing a price on his head. The 65th Lyran Regulars managed to escape into the periphery largely intact and, by around 2855, settled on the warm temperate world of Oberon VI to found an independent state which would evolve into the Oberon Confederation that his descendants formed in 3012.

Hey Tak what about this Lyran Regiment.

Re: Threat Assessments 2785

There is no evidence that this unit existed in 2785. It and other Lyran Regulars could well have been created during the 1st Succession War (35 years) or more plausibly during the peace that lasted a decade before the start of the 2nd Succession War. Whatever the case we tried our best to explain the confusing hodgepodge of Lyran Regular units in our overview.

from the FM:LA p85.  the Lyran regulars existed before the exodus but were created and disbanded as required.  Only became a permanent fixture of the LCAF during the Kerensky regency.  Made up of mercs, former SLDF and former RWR troops, regarded as little more than a Merc Brigade by the high command.  Assigned hopeless missions and the survivors rolled up into new units.

Scored a number of resounding victories during the 1st SW.

explains why the numbers ie 65th can be so high.

Re: Threat Assessments 2785

Well guys we are still working on Threat Assessments 2785 and thanks to Rainbow 6 we realized that our Lyran summary needed revision. He spotted the 2nd Tamar Jaegers in the short story Tactics of Betrayal which appeared in 25 Years of Art and Fiction. I had planned on introducing the Jagers later (opening stages of the 3rd Succession War) given the canon information that appeared in Camo Specs. However TPTB apparently have retconned them to an earlier date which I had no problem with. Special thanks also goes out to Tokage who is largely responsible for the feel of the Jaegers which I really ran with. Hope you enjoy these notes. Also Bradshaw redid their insignia awhile back, enjoy!

Tamar Jaegers (8 regiments)
Overview: After the conclusion of the Lyran Civil War (circa 2506) the Commonwealth military established a new 4 regiment unit to represent the Tamar Pact. The restored command focusing on loyalty to House Steiner was named Jaegers in recognition of their newly pledged fealty. The formation has always striven for but never truly attained the martial excellence of their Tamarian forbearers. Even though the LCAF continually pushed the Jaegers to achieve devotion to the Steiners has always eclipsed this long term goal. Efforts to win the Jaegers’ devotion took a twist after the infamous “Day of Rage” which forever shattered their trust in the Archon. Realizing that the soldiers of Tamar might always be hostile to the Steiners the Lyran royal family successfully plotted to out their anger to good use. Hatred of the Draconis Combine and even the Rim Worlds was encouraged by recruiting practices, training methods, extensive propaganda, along with other innovative efforts. Kurita and Amaris were made into easy scapegoats by the Archons who promoted ill will towards their neighbors as a way to distract against domestic discontent. Such hatred fostered a ruthless attitude that soon bought the Jaegers a reputation for brutality. Their hatred of the Dragon is so intense that even Rasalhague natives have come to fear their very approach. These denizens might be sympathetic to Lyran efforts to liberate their worlds from Kurita rule if not for the Jaegers continued cruelty. Second only to their dislike of the Dragon is the Rim Worlds Republic whose homelands they now help occupy. Ill will from the Reunification War and the recent Amaris Coup have given the Jaegers another target for their anger. The Jaegers were a constant irritant to the SLDF who always had to account for their rages. While the command expanded to eight BattleMech regiments during the Star League era further expansion was curtailed by the Steiners who had their reasons to halt said growth. The Jaegers don’t get along with the Tamar Hussars who they view as premadonnas.
