In the Traits section it says that all Rank points are forfeited if the character leaves the organization> Does this mean that during generation the points are lost if after the Tour Module you take Civilian Job or are they still there waiting to be optimized?

Blake says to obey GIR.

I would keep it there during generation, at least. Then, once gameplay starts, I would at least keep a note of the rank, or leave it there, appended with "(retired)" or "(inactive)", in case the character ever re-enlists or gets reactivated, or maybe runs into someone that was in the same unit or involved in the same operation and they start reminiscing.
Plus, maybe a store has a veterans' discount he could take advantage of.

A grizzled old tanker looked disgustedly at the discharge papers as he checked out of the NAIS Veterans Hospital. "20 years! 20 years I gave you! Every year, I dropped everything I had into getting promoted and THIS is what I get!?" A nearby infantry veteran nodded at him and said, "Be glad. I did the same. And what's it worth? My 9 TP and 5 c-Bills will get me a coffee down at the VSW, that's about it."

Yeah...
We ran into this one as well, and I wrote it up in the Fan Input board. My group had a lot of interesting what-ifs based on their old characters, who were former - X in their House militaries, and currently - Y in their Merc unit. The changes weren't always up.
The book itself says that rank is best handled by the GM after character creation. The bottom line, I think, is that under the old system it wasn't the 'zero sum' system we're running under now, so you got rank from training and tours of duty, but you weren't paying points for that rank- it was just part of spending time in the lifepath. With modules, whatever you get in the module, you're paying for. Including former rank that no longer really benefits your character...

Well...
Posted, but apparently it's a non-issue since the major concern has now become math-checking on the life modules. I'd still like to hears some kind of input on this particular problem, especially since thanks to this thread I know my players aren't the only ones that brought it up...

I would figure that the points zero out during creation, so if you gain +200 points from the modules, then leave the organization for whatever reason, you get an automatic -200 as well.

But you paid the 200 in the lifepaths. If it disappears suddenly, your character is worth less than he says. If your 4500 XP character with Rank 4 forms his own mercenary unit on his 21st birthday, he is now worth 4100 XP. I think the real problem is that 1 TP of rank is not equivalent to 1 TP of any other ability. For instance, does anybody really think that being a Trooper (appears roughly equivalent to PFC) is really 'worth' the same number of XP as Fast Learner? If Rank followed the same cost progression as skills, however.... I think 80 XP is more equivalent to Trooper (just shy of G-Tolerance) than 300 (equal to Fast Learner).

Another rank question.
If I create a mechwarrior character, am I bound then to spend at least 300 xps on Rank?

Well, the Davions would presumably not have that since it's an automatic promotion.

You still pay for it. Those 300 XP could be used on something else. Short answer, yes if you want your character to be in a house military unit. Probably yes if you want your character to be in a mecenary military unit. And technically, you have to spend 300 XP plus the XP necessary to to go through OCS since that Rank 3 for Mechwarrior is an officer rank. To be an enlisted mechwarrior, you need to go to Rank E5, or 500 XP.

Of course, this is a house rule, but in our unit MechWarrior is an E-4 rank, and will be purchased accordingly. Basically, you go Rct - Pvt - Pfc - and then either Corporal of MechWarrior depending on your job. If you're just driving a 'Mech, you get MechWarrior. If you're a Lance NCO, you're a Corporal. MechWarriors can also be promoted to Senior MechWarrior (E-5) and Master MechWarrior (E-6), which carry no command authority but do entitle the MechWarrior to additional pay.
