Classic BattleTech: More than a GameFiction has always played an important role in Classic BattleTech, with more than eighty novels published to date (and well over a hundred sourcebooks) fleshing out and expanding the universe into its current, vibrant form. Classic BattleTech uses two different types of fiction to convey its story. "Story fiction" includes novels, novellas, short stories and so on; fiction that puts the reader inside the heads of the characters that populate the universe. "Sourcebook fiction" - which appears in the various Handbooks, Historicals, Technical Readouts and so on - presents story elements as though the reader were a character transplanted into the game universe, reading military documents, historical texts, secret security briefs, intercepted personal communications, local newspapers and so on. These two methods work hand-in-hand to bring the BattleTech universe to life. While the current BattleTech novel line (MechWarrior: Dark Age) deals with events transpiring three generations in the future of the Classic BattleTech era, story fiction still serves a vital function. Every Classic BattleTech sourcebook published by FanPro includes a short story. In addition, BattleCorps publishes numerous Classic BattleTech stories every month that support product releases (sourcebooks and rulebooks), as well as the current Jihad story arc. As noted, Classic BattleTech is much more than a board game. Vibrant, strong and still growing after twenty years, the fictional universe and the valiant struggles of its dynamic human characters, set against a far-future battlefield, has endeared it to millions of fans and will continue to do so into the future. To convey the universe to the BattleTech community (as well as demonstrate how players can take that universe and integrate it into the game system), FanPro LLC publishes several different lines of rulebooks, sourcebooks, campaign packs and so on. While not an all-inclusive list, the following provides an overview of the primary series of products published by FanPro LLC for Classic BattleTech. STARTERBOOKSOnce players have tried their hands at BattleTech, they canjump into the further excitement of the Classic BattleTech universe through a Starterbook. Each Starterbook is completely self-contained, including the record sheets to play the additional ’Mechs provided in each volume. CORE RULEBOOKSFollowing the introduction to the game through the Classic BattleTech Introductory Box Set (or the Classic BattleTech Quick-Start Rules, or through a friend and so), the core rulebooks are the foundation of game play (and the universe) for the various aspects of Classic BattleTech. Total Warfare is the first in this new series of core rulebooks, delivering a breadth and a visual presentation never before achieved. Classic BattleTech Total Warfare will be followed by five more core rulebooks, which will act as the bedrock for any type of game players may wish to undertake: Classic BattleTech TechManual (construction rules for the various units found in Total Warfare), Classic BattleTech Universe (a one-stop guide to the places and people of BattleTech), Classic BattleTech Tactical Operations (advanced rules, equipment and units, including construction rules) Classic BattleTech RPG, Revised (a complete game system for roleplaying), and Classic BattleTech Strategic Operations (a rules framework for building and running any type of unit through everything from small scale campaigns to multi-war clashes between stellar empires and more). TECHNICAL READOUTSThe ultimate guidebooks to the weaponry and war machines of the 31st century, Classic BattleTech technical readouts describe the BattleMechs, Combat Vehicles, Support Vehicles, aerospace fighters, DropShips, WarShips, infantry and more of the BattleTech universe. Each fully illustrated entry in these reference books contains complete Classic BattleTech game statistics. Pre-filled record sheets for the various units found in the technical readouts are published separately. THE JIHADClassic BattleTech has always been a dynamic universe with progressing storylines that shake things up, uniting and shattering factions, developing characters into beloved (or despised) icons that wage a valiant struggle or die a glorious death. Such events breathe life not only into the fiction players read, but the games they play. The current universe-shaking storyline is the Word of Blake’s Jihad, begun in 2005 with the publication of Dawn of the Jihad and Jihad Hot Spots: 3070. Look for future Jihad books that will continue to shock, amaze and entertain for years to come. HANDBOOKSThe Classic BattleTech Universe book provides a taste of the Great Houses of the Inner Sphere. Each House represents a fully fleshed-out star-spanning realm, with its own history, cultural identity, fighting style and so on. Each volume in the series is filled with the essential histories, politics, culture and industry that makes up the Great Houses; the books include rules for personal equipment, creatures, campaign ideas and more for Classic BattleTech and Classic BattleTech RPG. HISTORICALSThe Historical series delves into the pivotal wars of the Inner Sphere’s thousand-year history, with important personalities, maps of individual attack waves and regiment listings, along with a campaign framework that allows players to enact every aspect of each of these important events. War of 3039 and Brush Wars are currently available. More such sourcebooks will appear in the future, allowing players to explore the stunning events of the current Jihad and the historical wars that have shaped every faction to date. MAP SETSPlayers will quickly find that one of the easiest ways to make an already played scenario fresh and new is to play it on a different map. In addition, the style of a playing map (mountain, forest, city and so on) can reinforce the flavor of a given scenario or campaign. The map sets published by FanPro (Map Set Compilation #1, Map Set Compilation #2 and so on) contain numerous full color, 17" x 22" playing maps, providing a plethora of choices when playing any type of Classic BattleTech game. Each map also comes with a blank hex-grid on the back, allowing players to generate their own maps. RECORD SHEETSWhile players can use the blank record sheets found in the Total Warfare Blank Record Sheets PDF to fill out any number of units, pre-filled record sheets (such as those found in the Classic BattleTech Introductory Record Sheets PDF) allow players to jump directly into the action. Players can order various pre-filled PDF record sheet books from the BattleShop. Players can also order a HeavyMetal software program that will allow them to print official/canon sheets. Classic BattleTech ErasThe Classic BattleTech universe is a living, vibrant entity that grows each year as more sourcebooks and fiction are published. A dynamic universe, its setting and characters evolve over time within a highly detailed continuity framework, bringing everything to life in a way a static game universe cannot match. However, the same dynamic energy that makes BattleTech so compelling can also make it confusing, with so many sourcebooks published over the years. As people encounter BattleTech, get hooked and start to obtain sourcebooks, they need to know where a particular sourcebook is best used along the BattleTech timeline. To help quickly and easily convey the timeline of the Classic BattleTech universe—and to allow a player to easily “plug in” a given sourcebook—we’ve divided Classic BattleTech into five major eras. (For those that own the Classic BattleTech Introductory Box Set, the year dates in parentheses following each era’s title correspond to the maps found in the Inner Sphere at a Glance sourcebook.) STAR LEAGUE (2570)Ian Cameron, ruler of the Terran Hegemony, concludes decades of tireless effort with the creation of the Star League, a political and military alliance between all Great Houses and the Hegemony. Star League armed forces immediately launch the Reunification War, forcing the Periphery realms to join. For the next two centuries, humanity experiences a golden age across the thousand light-years of human-occupied space known as the Inner Sphere. It also sees the creation of the most powerful military in human history. SUCCESSION WARS (3025, 3030, 3040)Every last member of First Lord Richard Cameron’s family is killed during a coup launched by Stefan Amaris. Following the thirteen-year war to unseat him, the rulers of each of the five Great Houses disband the Star League. General Aleksandr Kerensky departs with eighty percent of the Star League Defense Force beyond known space and the Inner Sphere collapses into centuries of warfare known as the Succession Wars that will eventually result in a massive loss of technology across most worlds. CLAN INVASION (3052, 3057)A mysterious invading force strikes the coreward region of the Inner Sphere. The invaders, called the Clans, are descendants of Kerensky’s SLDF troops, forged into a society dedicated to becoming the greatest fighting force in history. With vastly superior technology and warriors, the Clans conquer world after world. Eventually this outside threat will forge a new Star League, something hundreds of years of warfare failed to accomplish. In addition, the Clans will act as a catalyst for a technological renaissance. CIVIL WAR (3062, 3067)The Clan threat is eventually lessened with the complete destruction of a Clan. With that massive external threat apparently neutralized, internal conflicts explode around the Inner Sphere. House Liao conquers its former Commonality, the St. Ives Compact; a rebellion of military units belonging to House Kurita sparks a war with their powerful border enemy, Clan Ghost Bear; the fabulously powerful Federated Commonwealth of House Steiner and House Davion collapses into five long years of bitter civil war. JIHAD (3067, Current)Following the Federated Commonwealth Civil War, the leaders of the Great Houses meet and disband the new Star League, declaring it a sham. The pseudo-religious Word of Blake—a splinter group of ComStar, the protectors and controllers of interstellar communication—launch the Jihad: an interstellar war that will ultimately pit every faction against each other and even against themselves, as weapons of mass destruction are used for the first time in centuries while new and frightening technologies are likewise unleashed. DARK AGE (3132+)Under the guidance of Devlin Stone, the Republic of the Sphere is born at the heart of the Inner Sphere following the Jihad. One of the more extensive periods of peace begins to break out as the 32nd century dawns. The factions, to one degree or another, embrace disarmament and the massive armies of the Succession Wars begin to fade. However, in 3132 eighty percent of interstellar communications collapses, throwing the universe into chaos. Wars almost immediately erupt and the factions begin rebuilding their armies. Classic BattleTech RulesClassic BattleTech simulates combat between various military vehicles in the thirty-first century. The type and depth of play that can be enjoyed is endlessly flexible, based upon what a playing group would like to experience at their gaming table. Whether a simple four ’Mechs vs. four ’Mechs on a single mapsheet, or hundreds of combined-arm units across a dozen map sheets to simulate a planetary assault: the skies the limit.CORE RULEBOOKS
The tiered rules system of core rulebooks introduces players to the most basic rules of the game through the Introductory Box Set, then transitions them through additional rulebooks (and the rules they contain) to expand the scope and fun of their games. The rulebooks that contain each type of rule are indicated in parenthesis after each title below. Additionally, the description following each header also indicates how the technology (weapons and equipment) of each rules set ties into the Classic BattleTech Eras (discussed above). Introductory (Classic BattleTech Introductory Box Set)The rules presented in the Introductory Box Set are considered the Introductory Rules of Classic BattleTech. Technology And Era: The Introductory Rules use the technology generally available in the year 3025 (Succession Wars). Standard/Tournament Legal (Total Warfare/TechManual)The rules presented in Total Warfare and TechManual are considered the Standard Rules (both game play and construction) of Classic BattleTech. Any official events (canon scenarios, tournaments and so on), whether held at a major gaming convention or a local game store, make use of the Standard Rules. Technology And Eras: The Standard Rules use technology generally available in the years 2750 (Star League), as well as 3050 and beyond (Clan Invasion, Civil War, Jihad, and Dark Age). Advanced (Tactical Operations/Strategic Operations/Interstellar Operations)Beyond the Standard Rules, a legion of Advanced Rules exists, allowing players to expand their games in any direction they desire. In an effort to bring these rules to players in the most logical form possible, the Advanced Rules are contained in three core rulebooks, each one staging up and building off of the previous rules set. These staging rulebooks are: Tactical Operations (forces on-world), Strategic Operations (forces in solar system) and Interstellar Operations (forces marshaled). Technology And Eras: The Advanced Rules (both game play and construction) use technology generally available in the years 2750 (Star League), as well as 3050 and beyond (Clan Invasion, Civil War, Jihad, and Dark Age). However, though the technology (and units) is in broad use within the universe they are beyond the scope of the Standard Rules and so are classified as advanced. Experimental (Tactical Operations)Unlike the Introductory, Standard and Advanced Rules, Experimental Rules are almost exclusively technology related. Technology And Eras: Experimental Rules use technology generally available in the years 3050 and beyond (Clan Invasion, Civil War, Jihad, and Dark Age). However, unlike Advanced Rules equipment which is in broad use, Experimental Rules equipment has yet to reach mass production in the BattleTech universe, because it is prohibitively expensive, extraordinarily sophisticated, exceedingly difficult to maintain, or simply deemed too unreliable or restrictive for widespread deployment. Era Specific (Interstellar Operations)Across the life of the BattleTech game system, the universe has established a certain aesthetic for what rules, equipment and units are (or can be) appropriate across any time period. However, the history of BattleTech encompasses a thousand years and during that time there are units and events that have occurred that fall outside of that aesthetic. Such rules/units/equipment have their place in the BattleTech universe, but are outside of any of the classifications noted above. Any such rules/units/equipment that fall into this category is considered Era Specific. UnofficialIf a rule/unit/equipment does not appear in any of the rulebooks above (even if it previously appeared in a BattleTech rulebook) it is considered unofficial; in the case of weapons and equipment published in a previous book that do not appear in any of the rulebooks above, it is considered “retired” and so unofficial. Future Sourcebooks: Future sourcebooks will include additional rules/units/equipment, but will always include a designation for how they fit within this tiered rules system. |
